Fleetwood holds one-shot lead, chases first PGA Tour win Sunday

Tommy Fleetwood will take a one-shot lead into the final day of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, hoping to finally claim his first PGA Tour victory. His third round at TPC Southwind was far from smooth, but he did enough to post a 1-under 69 and stay on top at 14-under.

Drama builds at FedEx St. Jude Championship final round

Fleetwood’s round included a costly double bogey at the par-5 third after finding the water and later a bogey on the 18th. In between, he recovered well enough to regain control of the leaderboard before giving back ground late. Justin Rose, who shot 67, will join Fleetwood in the final pairing after making a clutch birdie on the last hole.

Scottie Scheffler is just two shots off the pace after carding a 65 that included six birdies. The world No. 1 is chasing his fifth win of the year, a feat not accomplished in back-to-back seasons since Tiger Woods in the mid-2000s.

J.J. Spaun and Andrew Novak sit three shots behind, while players like Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley are fighting to secure spots in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings, which guarantees entry into next season’s $20 million signature events.

Fleetwood has 42 career top-10 finishes without a PGA Tour title, the most by any player in the last four decades. Sunday offers him another shot to erase that stat and finally close the deal.

The BMW Championship tees off on August 14 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland. This will highlight the top 50 players, before the TOUR Championship is slated for August 21-24.
