Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will miss Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders as the team remains cautious with his knee sprain. While it’s common practice for teams to protect their starting QBs, Washington’s approach has another side. They don’t want to repeat what happened to Robert Griffin III.
On Friday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz tweeted:
“The team is being extra cautious, not wanting to make any sort of RG3-type mistake — something that’s been mentioned in the building.”
Daniels sustained the sprain during Week 2’s loss vs. the Green Bay Packers, where he faced relentless pressure, including four sacks and 12 total hits. Though he finished the game, MRI results revealed the knee injury.
There were severe mishandlings when Griffin suffered knee injuries. RGIII sustained torn ACL, LCL and meniscus ligaments early in his career and was reportedly rushed back to play too soon.
According to Schultz, the Commanders will make some adjustments on Sunday.
“Andrew Wylie set to start at RG,” Schultz wrote. “Washington has dealt with heavy pressure off the right side in two games, and Wylie — who has 88 career starts — is expected to step in to help stabilize things.”
Backup Marcus Mariota will start against the Raiders. The team won’t rush Daniels, so Mariota must hold a winning record. If losses pile up, pressure will mount to start Daniels, and that’s what Mariota must avoid.
