The Boston Celtics are entering what’s widely expected to be a retooling year following Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury and a series of significant offseason moves.
The team’s frontcourt has taken a major hit. Kristaps Porzingis was traded in a cost-cutting move, Al Horford is unlikely to return and Luke Kornet signed with the San Antonio Spurs in free agency. The team will lean on Neemias Queta, Luka Garza and Xavier Tillman to replace those three pieces from Boston’s 2024 championship roster, though none of the team’s current options have real experience in a sustained starting role.
That could open the door for a Summer League standout to earn a spot on the regular-season roster.
Entering his fifth season, former San Antonio center Charles Bassey is hoping to latch on with Boston after showcasing his talent this summer, according to Noa Dalzell of CelticsBlog.
“It remains to be seen whether the Celtics end up having the cap space, or sufficient interest, to sign Bassey,” Dalzell wrote. “But, contrary to previous reports, sources say Bassey is currently not planning on playing in Europe next season. And, Boston is a destination he is particularly fond of.”

The Celtics currently have an open roster spot, though signing Bassey would nudge them back over the second apron — a threshold they worked to avoid by trading Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.
However, the club is reportedly exploring ways to reroute Anfernee Simons in a cost-cutting move. If Boston can shed salary through a Simons trade, it would create more flexibility to sign Bassey.
The 24-year-old center has also drawn interest overseas, though he’ll likely prioritize staying in the NBA. After spending Summer League with the team, it appears Bassey is interested in striking a deal if Boston can clear the necessary cap space. During his three Summer League games, he averaged 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks across 21.3 minutes per game.
