Ex-Maryland star pass catcher inches closer to early return with New England Patriots

Stefon Diggs might not just be back this season — he might be back on time.

Diggs saw his 2024 season cut short in Week 8 after tearing his ACL on a route against the Colts while playing for the Texans. The injury didn’t stop New England from signing him in the offseason — though at the time, there were real questions about whether he’d be healthy in time for training camp.

Now, it looks like Diggs could be back sooner than anticipated.

According to ESPN and Patriots insider Mike Reise, Diggs is expected to be on the field for the start of training camp after the team decided not to place him on the PUP or NFI lists. That’s a big boost for a Patriots squad eager to make strides under new head coach Mike Vrabel.

Diggs agreed to a three-year, $69 million contract this offseason, including $26 million guaranteed. With rookie quarterback Drake Maye preparing to take over, the Patriots are hoping Diggs can be more than just a security blanket — they need him to be a difference-maker.

Diggs entered the league in 2015 as a fifth-round pick out of Maryland and has since built a career on consistency, grit, and big moments. He’s played for Minnesota, Buffalo, and Houston, and now lands in New England with a chance to anchor a young offense.

Diggs has put together a strong body of work over 10 seasons — 857 catches, more than 10,000 yards, 70 touchdowns, and six years with over 1,000 yards.

Stats aside, he still runs crisp routes and knows how to find space, even when defenders are draped on him. If he’s anywhere near his old form, he gives the Patriots a real shot at shaking off last year’s offensive struggles.
