Ex-Celtic striker tips Ange Postecoglou to return to club after Brendan Rodgers departure

Celtic are set to begin the search for a new permanent manager after the shock resignation from Brendan Rodgers on Monday night (October 27).

Rodgers stepped away from the position just over two years into the job after a period of uncertainty over his future in Glasgow.

The former Liverpool boss had been involved in disputes with the club over a lack of transfer activity, while he also claimed that a new contract had not been offered to him amid speculation over his long-term future.

The announcement of the 52-year-old’s exit came just a day after Celtic lost 3-1 to Scottish Premier League leaders Hearts to fall eight points behind Derek McInnes’ side.

The resignation signals Rodgers’ second exit from the Scottish giants, after he left Celtic in his first managerial spell with the club in 2019 to take charge at Leicester City.

Ex-Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has been tasked with taking interim charge at Celtic Park, where he will be assisted by former Celtic midfielder Shaun Maloney.

Former Celtic star keen for Ange Postecoglou to make return to club

Attention will soon turn to who will replace Rodgers on a permanent basis in the Celtic dugout.

Per former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, Ange Postecoglou should be prioritised by the club’s board to turn fortunes around following Rodgers’ exit.

Postecoglou won two league titles in as many years while operating as Celtic manager from 2021-2023, and is now out of work after a disappointing 39-day stint as the Nottingham Forest manager.

“I think Ange Postecoglou would be a really smart appointment. He was loved the first time round,” Sutton told Sky Sports News.

“His brand of football went down well in Glasgow. He’s out of work. I think that would be a pretty obvious choice, a good choice.”

“Bring a lot of positivity back to Celtic, which they need right now,” the ex-Celtic star added.

O’Neill’s first game as the club’s interim boss will be a league outing against Falkirk on Wednesday night (October 29) at home.

Preparation will then switch to an Old Firm Derby showdown with Rangers in the League Cup semi-finals on Sunday afternoon (November 2).
