The Pittsburgh Penguins had their 2025-26 home opener on Thursday night.
Not only was it the beginning of another year of Pens hockey in the Steel City, but it was a historic evening as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang were honored for their 20th season as teammates.
Deservingly so, the trio received a pregame tribute on the Jumbotron at PPG Paints Arena as they stood together in front of the Penguins’ net.
Everyone in the arena showed their love and appreciation for the three future Hall of Famers, and in fitting fashion, they ultimately played a huge role in the 4-3 win over the New York Islanders.
It was a special night in Pittsburgh, and Evgeni Malkin reflected on it all after the game when speaking to the media. Pens Inside Scoop shared his remarks on X (formerly Twitter).
“It’s very special. Time is flying. I feel like 20 years ago, it’s one day. It’s amazing. Love to play with Sid and Tanger. Same team together 20 years. It’s special. People talk a lot about that. I try to do my best. Who knows? Maybe last year. I do my best and try to help the team to win. Sid, a special kid. Tanger, too. Lots of memories, lots of wins together. Keep going,” Malkin said.

The 39-year-old just began the fourth and final season of the four-year, $24.4 million extension he signed with the Penguins back in 2022.
Malkin off to a hot start
Golden Knights superstar Jack Eichel leads the NHL in scoring with two goals and four assists for six points thus far, but right behind him in second place, with five points, all five being assists, is none other than Evgeni Malkin.
20 years later, and he’s still proving to the hockey world that he can play and produce at a high level. Malkin has shown great chemistry thus far on a line with Justin Brazeau and Anthony Mantha while also clicking on the Penguins’ star-studded power play.
It’s still early, and it will certainly be difficult to keep up this pace at his age, but Evgeni Malkin is motivated by the retirement rumors and claims that he’s done, so don’t be surprised if we see a lot of vintage Geno this season.
