ESPN journalist drops worrying update on Vinicius Jr.–Real Madrid contract extension

Vinicius Jr. is under contract with Real Madrid until 2027, but the La Liga club likely doesn’t want him heading into next season with one year left on his deal. As a result, both sides are in talks over an extension, but the dialogue isn’t going smoothly.

During the 2023-24 season, the Brazilian recorded 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 total appearances. This production put Vinicius Jr. in the conversation for the Ballon d’Or, which was awarded to Manchester City standout Rodri.

Last season, the 25-year-old scored 22 goals and recorded 19 assists in 58 total appearances, but Real Madrid failed to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Amid the contract extension talks, ESPN’s Alex Kirkland gave an update and noted that the two sides aren’t close to reaching an agreement.

“Now, what we know is that the demands of Vini Jr., in terms of how much money he’s asking for, and what Madrid have offered him so far — there’s still a big gap between those two figures,” Kirkland said recently on ESPN FC. “It’s not a gap, at the moment, they’ve been willing to bridge.

“And, at the moment, that’s where we are. Now, of course, this was never going to be, I don’t think, straightforward, despite all the noise we heard from Vinicius every chance he got last season — kept saying, I love being at Real Madrid.”

The summer isn’t over yet, but if both sides decide to stand firm in these negotiations, then talks over an extension could leak into the 2025-26 season. It will be interesting to see whether if these discussions do leak into the season and whether or not Vinicius Jr.’s play will be affected.
