Enzo Maresca picks four Chelsea players who deserve Champions League football

Chelsea are set to take on Manchester United in their penultimate game of the Premier League season at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.

The Blues currently find themselves in fifth position and need to win their last two league games to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

And while the jury is still out on whether Chelsea deserve a spot in Europe’s premier club competition or not, their manager, Enzo Maresca, certainly believes that at least four of his players are worthy of a place in the Champions League.

While speaking to the press before the game against Manchester United, Maresca underlined four Chelsea players who have had an impressive domestic season and are worthy of a place in next season’s Champions League, should Chelsea qualify for the tournament.

The first player that came to mind is Chelsea’s talisman, Cole Palmer.

The 23-year-old Chelsea talisman has had to overcome a spell where the goals dried up for him, but Maresca has made it clear that the Englishman does not have to score to influence the game.

What Maresca had to say about his players who deserve Champions League football

“You judge an important player if they are able to score or assist, but for instance against Liverpool, sure [Palmer’s] scored a last-minute penalty, but his performance was top in all aspects: sacrifice, desire, helping teammates,” Maresca said in quotes on the club’s official website..

“We are happy with that kind of performance from Cole. If he is able to score and assist, we are even happier. Cole’s desire is to be an important player in these last three games.”

“But Cole is not the only one who deserves Champions League,” the coach continued.

“Moi [Caicedo] is also a player who deserves Champions League, and Enzo Fernandez and Levi Colwill. This is the reason why we have been there and we are going to try to finish there, because we have many players in terms of status who deserve to play Champions League.”
