England vs. Italy score: Women’s Euro 2025 result, highlights as Lionesses reach final on dramatic win

For the second consecutive match, substitutes have helped England rescue victory from the jaws of defeat, downing Italy 2-1 in extra-time to reach the competition’s final.

Just like against Sweden in the quarterfinals, Michelle Agyemang scored the critical late equaliser, bagging a 96th minute strike to draw level and extend the match. This time, however, a penalty shootout wouldn’t be necessary as Chloe Kelly struck moments from the final whistle, bagging the rebound of her own saved penalty to secure the win.

Italy, were heartbreakingly close to securing a shock result, going ahead just past the half-hour mark through Barbara Bonansea and hanging on through the majority of the match.

The defending champions, for their part, were poor for large stretches throughout the game. As she was in the Sweden match, Kiera Walsh was marked out of the match for the first 60 minutes, and England had few options to build beyond that. The Lionesses hit the panic button early, thumping crosses into the penalty area in desperation across the final 15 minutes of the match.

With the game level, England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made a critical double save in the 86th minute to deny Italy’s best chance to kill off the game.

Then, just like the quarterfinal days before, substitutes made the difference as 19-year-old Agyemang struck with a composed finish six minutes into added time, sending the match to extra-time. As England thusly snatched the momentum, Beth Mead won a penalty with three minutes remaining and Kelly buried the rebound after Laura Giuliani saved her initial effort.

England will face either Spain or Germany in the final, where they will look to become just the second women’s national team to win consecutive European championships, alongside Germany’s six straight wins from 1995 to 2013.

England vs. Italy live updates, highlights from Women’s Euro 2025 semifinal

FULLTIME: England 2-1 Italy

THE LIONESSES REFUSE TO DIE! The defending European champions are marching on to the Euro 2025 final in emphatic comeback fashion, while Italy have their hearts broken!

It was FAR from pretty, but England used the late-game chaos to their advantage and overwhelmed a tiring Italy through the final minutes of regulation and into extra-time. Italy never recovered from the Agyemang equaliser, and are punished for their inability to kill off the game.

117th min: PENALTY, ENGLAND! Beth Mead is wrestled to the ground by a bear hug from Emma Severini, and England have a late penalty!! Lauren Hemp’s deflected cross is seeking Mead standing on the penalty spot, and Severini comes through the back of Mead and barrels her to the ground!

Chloe Kelly steps up to the ball and…SAVED, but the rebound is in!!! GOAL!!! ENGLAND!!! Kelly’s initial effort is parried away by Laura Giuliani who dives to the goalkeeper’s right, but the England sub is there to bury the rebound! Had Kelly not gotten to it, her teammate was there as well!

116th min: Chance, England! MICHELLE AGYEMANG HITS THE CROSSBAR FROM AN IMPOSSIBLE ANGLE! It’s so close to a glorious winner for the England youngster, as she is marshaled outside down the right but somehow manages to loop the ball over both her defender and the goalkeeper, denied by only the woodwork!

Watch in UK:

Kickoff of extra-time second half: As they get back under way, England are making a change as Grace Clinton replaces Kiera Walsh in midfield.

HALFTIME OF EXTRA-TIME: England 1-1 Italy

Very little happened in those 15 minutes all-in-all, with tired legs on both sides. Each team tried pinging long balls forward, but the attackers didn’t seem to have the gas to finish the moves. At this point, it seems headed to penalties, unless someone crops up with a moment of magic!

95th min: Chance, England! It’s cleared off the line by Cecilia Salvai! Chasing down a wayward pass and keeping it in play on the left touchline, Alex Greenwood sends in a vicious cross to the near post which troubles Giuliani! The Italy goalkeeper awkwardly comes out to challenge, but can only bobble the ball and see it clip off England’s challenging attacker and head towards the goal mouth. There’s Salvai to boot the slow-roller away just inches before it finds the back of the net!

Kickoff of extra time: They’re back under way for extra time, with 30 minutes to decide a potential winner before a penalty shootout decides the winner. England will likely make their additional change soon, as Weigman has to sort out their imbalance after throwing on an attacker for a defender at the end of regulation. For now, though, she is letting it fly.

END OF REGULATION: England 1-1 Italy

Heartbreak for Italy and elation for England, as the Lionesses refuse to die once again and send the match to extra-time! Michelle Agyemang’s 96th-minute equaliser is the difference, as England continued in desperate fashion until they found the breakthrough.

The momentum has completely swapped sides on the goal, and now Italy will be forced to fend off relentless England attacking pressure for these 30 minutes if they are to send this game to penalties or earn a shocking counter-attack winner.

90+6 min: GOAL! ENGLAND! THEY’VE DONE IT AGAIN, AND JUST LIKE LAST TIME, IT’S MICHELLE AGYEMANG OFF THE BENCH WHO SAVES THE LIONESSES!!!!!!!!!

Italy goalkeeper Laura Giuliani comes out to punch a cross into the penalty area, and it falls into the path of Agyemang who calmly and cooly takes her time for a touch and a finish into the back of the net!!!!! Italy are shattered, and England are rejuvenated!

Watch in UK:

90+4 min: Oh dear, with the goalkeeper Hannah Hampton up in the penalty area, Chloe Kelly produces a horrible penalty that harmlessly hits the side netting. England have been woefully wasteful in the final third today.

90+2 min: A little pushing and shoving results in yellow cards for Michela Cambiaghi and Esme Morgan, which Italy can take as a slight win for killing more time. England are in full panic mode.

87th min: A thumping challenge from Martina Lenzini cleans out Lauren Hemp and earns a yellow card. Lucia Di Guglielmo is replaced by Giada Greggi.

Seven minutes of stoppage time are shown!

86th min: Chance, Italy! HOW HAVE ITALY NOT FINISHED THIS GAME OFF?!?!?!?! Two brilliant saves from Hannah Hampton have kept the Lionesses in this! She stops two efforts off a corner, first from Michela Cambiaghi and then by Emma Severini on the follow-up!

Italy made it look like they would keep the corner by the flag and waste time, and caught England off guard by swinging it in, but Hampton was up to the task! What a pair of stops!

83rd min: England are making two more attacking changes, as Michelle Agyemang and Agnes Beaver-Jones will come into the match. Those are Sarina Weigman’s final two forwards on the bench!

81st min: England are pouring on the pressure! Three successive corners from Chloe Kelly are turned away, the second of which was the most dangerous. She swung it deep to the far post where Lucy Bronze was waiting, and her header back across the face of goal put it on a platter at the other post, but it was cleared from there.

77th min: Chloe Kelly is the one off the bench for England, replacing Georgia Stanway. Is it too late from England who need a goal to turn this around?

74th min: Italy make another change as Emma Severini and Michela Cambiaghi enter for the two wingers, Sofia Cantore and Barbara Bonansea.

The Italy goalkeeper Giuliani is booked for time wasting, as is their coach Andrea Soncin.

68th min: For what feels like the thousandth time today, an England forward gets free to the byline and crosses it into the six-yard box but nobody’s there. Lioness attackers have been missing in the penalty area all day long, for whatever reason hanging back for the cutback instead of attacking the goal.

64th min: Italy make their first change as captain Cristiana Girelli looks to be injured, limping off and replaced by Martina Piemonte up front.

England will want to consider further alterations as well, potentially on the left wing as Lauren Hemp has been incredibly poor both distributing to teammates and finishing her own chances.

53rd min: Chance, Italy! It’s all opening up now, as Italy have a counter attack down their right wing allowing Sofia Cantore to get free for a shot, but she fires it right at Hannah Hampton covering her near post well!

52nd min: Chance, England! Another poor finish from Lauren Hemp with a big chance to score! A blocked shot from Kiera Walsh is recycled, and as the return feed evades Beth Mead, Hemp latches onto the loose ball but can’t deposit it in the back of the net, instead hitting it right at the goalkeeper!

51st min: Chance, England! A wonderful cross from deep on the right flank falls to the head of Lauren Hemp at the far post, who is unmarked and has time to pick out a window on goal. Instead, she can’t get on top of the ball and loops her header harmlessly over the crossbar! A disappointing effort!

2nd half kickoff: They’re back under way for the second half, as there’s one change for Sarina Wiegman who brings on Beth Mead up front to replace Lauren James.

HALFTIME: England 0-1 Italy

Italy have their goal against the run of play, and ultimately have done very well to contain England through the first 45 minutes. It would be hard to say Italy were the “better” side but they absolutely deserve their lead.

England, for their part, were better after falling behind, but it’s still been quite the disjointed approach from the Lionesses who don’t look as if they have too many creative ideas for how to break Italy down.

38th min: Chance, England! Lauren James forces a big save from Laura Giuliani! The Lionesses have a three-on-two counter-attack which sees a floated cross from the left fall perfectly for Lauren James. She takes a horrible first touch and nearly loses it to her trailing defender, but manages to recover and put a shot on frame towards the near post.

It’s a good effort, but not good enough to beat the Italy goalkeeper who dives to parry it away!

33rd min: GOAL! ITALY! THE UNDERDOGS LEAD! BARBARA BONANSEA ROOFS IT FROM CLOSE RANGE!

A cross from the right is on a platter for Italy captain Cristiana Girelli, but the ball evades her slide which surprises everyone in the penalty area except Bonansea who remains alert. With the ball now on a platter at her feet and the England defense scrambling to recover, she keeps her calm and ripples the net with her 32nd career international goal.

Watch in UK:

27th min: This match is a stalemate. England have really struggled in the build-up, and Italy have panicked every time they get into the final third. It’s resulted in a really tough watch over the first half-hour.

Overall, very little had happened in this match. Italy have been utilising the Sweden approach of man-marking Keira Walsh out of the game, forcing England to bypass their midfield maestro and find other options forward, which has created a messy match.

20th min: Chance, England! Alessia Russo finds a gift at her feet after both Italy defenders marking her in the penalty area whiff on a speculative ball in, but her 180-degree turn-and-shoot effort is wide!

Watch in UK:

11th min: Chance, England! Lauren James forces the Italy goalkeeper into an early save as she redirects a deflected cross on net. James did well to sneak into the penalty area unmarked, and the ball falls kindly to her, but she fails to get the right contact and it’s an easy low save for Laura Giuliani in the end.

8th min: It’s been an extremely cagey start for both teams. England have maintained the majority of possession but have been sloppy in the final third, while Italy are struggling to assert themselves with time on the ball. England’s best attacks have come down the left flank but they have not found a way through.

Lucy Bronze catches the early ire of the Croatian referee with a hard foul of Barbara Bonansea, but no yellow card is shown.

Kickoff: They’re under way in Geneva, with a spot in the Euro 2025 final on the line!

England vs. Italy: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

30 mins to kickoff: England head coach Sarina Wiegman has a task of fixing England’s biggest weakness ahead of this match, which was exposed by both France and Sweden in this tournament. The Lionesses rely heavily on Keira Walsh in midfield, and slowing her down can, in essence, cut off England at the ankles.

Walsh completed just 32 of her 43 pass attempts against Sweden for a 74% clip. While she won seven of her nine ground duels, she was clearly pressured into coughing up possession. Italy will lean on pressure from midfielder Arianna Caruso and Emma Severini to help replicate that formula for success.

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! For England, Jess Carter is on the bench after the racist abuse suffered online, with Esme Morgan brought in along the back in her place. England captain Lean Williamson is in the lineup, while Chloe Kelly, Beth Mead, and quarterfinal hero Michelle Agyemang are the attacking options off the bench.

For Italy, the only surprise is at right-back where Martina Lenzini steps in for quarterfinal starter Emma Severini.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: It’s expected that England captain Leah Williamson will be ready to play today, as Sarina Wiegman confirmed that she trained yesterday and is fit to take part. Williamson had been spotted on crutches exiting the stadium after the quarterfinal win over Sweden, but reports said that was just part of her management for an ankle injury that has hampered her throughout this tournament.

2 hours to kickoff: Welcome to coverage of England vs. Italy! We’re gearing up for a semifinal match between two top-15 ranked sides in women’s football, but there is still a clear favourite in this meeting.

Since their opening-round loss to France, England have looked unstoppable at times. They walloped the Netherlands and Wales to close out the group stage and then managed an impressive comeback against globally renowned Sweden to advance on penalties.

Given Italy fell 5-1 to England last February, they have an uphill fight to stun the Lionesses and reach the final.

England vs. Italy lineups, team news

The Lionesses have some injury concerns following their arduous quarterfinal. Captain Leah Williamson (ankle), Lucy Bronze (hamstring tightness), and Lauren James (knock) all suffered damage of some sort against Sweden. There is optimism surrounding their fitness, though, with the full squad out to train on Monday.

Changes in defence sees Esme Morgan come in at centre-back, as Wiegman opts for a reshuffle following their statement on the racist abuse suffered by Jess Carter who sits on the bench.

England starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Hampton (GK) — Bronze, Williamson, Morgan, Greenwood — Walsh, Stanway — James, Toone, Hemp — Russo.

England subs: Moorhouse (GK), Keating (GK), Charles, Mead, Le Tissier, Clinton, Carter, Agyemang, Kelly, Beever-Jones, Park, Wubben-Moy.

Italy have no reported injury concerns or suspensions. Their strength lies in the midfield with the technical ability and movement of Manuela Giugliano and Arianna Caruso, and the clinical finishing of Cristiana Girelli, who is among the tournament’s leading scorers.

Italy have shown the ability to switch between a 3-4-3 with wingbacks or a 4-3-3 with wide forwards.

Italy starting lineup (4-3-3): 1. Giuliani (GK) — Lenzini, Salvai, Linari, Di Guglielmo — Caruso, Giugliano, Oliviero — Bonansea, Girelli, Cantore.

Italy subs: Durante (GK), Baldi (GK), Piga, Boattin, Serturini, Goldoni, Severini, Schatzer, Greggi, Bergamaschi, Piemonte, Cambiaghi.
