England legend makes unique gesture to approve Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona switch

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has sealed a dream move to Barcelona on a loan deal

Both clubs reached an agreement, and the move could be official in the next few days, as the 27-year-old wanted a move to Camp Nou right from the start of the summer.

Rashford had spent the last two weeks training away from the Manchester United first team as he was looking for a move away.

He resurrected his career following his loan stint at Aston Villa last season and would look to continue that momentum at Barcelona.

After the ultimatum of Barcelona closing out the deal, former England striker Gary Lineker made a great gesture to approve Rashford’s move to Barcelona.

He changed his Instagram display picture to two players standing on 10 Downing Street, donning the Number 10 shirts for England.

Interestingly, Rashford is only the second English star to feature for Barcelona after Lineker, that too after 38 years.

Lineker joined Barcelona in 1986 from Everton, and he remained at the club for three seasons and netted 51 goals in 138 matches for the Blaugrana.

It was a move that opened up avenues for English players to move abroad and try different experiences rather than playing in the English top flight.

What could Rashford bring to the Barcelona squad?

Rashford was once thought of as the next big thing at Old Trafford as he rose through the ranks at youth level in Manchester.

But in recent years, he had fallen out of favour with the club and eventually made a move to Villa on loan last season.

Barcelona desperately needed someone on the left flank and, after missing out on Nico Williams and Luis Diaz, they shifted their focus to Rashford.

The England international could be a great option for the Blaugrana, considering he could feature on the left flank and also slot in as a replacement for Robert Lewandowski upfront..

He was on an astronomical salary at United and is reportedly taking a pay cut to move to Barcelona.

During his loan stint at Villa, he rekindled his form, scoring four goals and providing six assists across 17 appearances.

Barcelona’s priority this summer was to strengthen the goalkeeper position and also add another player in attack on the left side.

The English forward is bringing experience of playing at the top level, and he also has the quality to flourish in Flick’s fluid attacking system, playing alongside top players.

The German tactician will look to tap into the 27-year-old’s goalscoring potential, which has dried up following his 30-goal season in the 2022/23 campaign.

He brings directness, dribbling, versatility, and chance creation to Barcelona’s potent attack as they already have players like Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Lewandowski, among others.
