Edmonton Oilers could solve goaltending issues by targeting Detroit prospect

For the Edmonton Oilers, goaltending seems to be a sore spot at times. Sure, Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard were suitable and at times, fantastic, but there were some serious concerns at times and while they are good now; the pipeline for Oilers goalies isn’t great.

They have to make a decision on who they want to pursue soon, and they have a wealth of options they can choose from. Joonas Korpisalo is on the block, Dennis hildeby could be a great young goalie with a strong future, but there’s one in particular that the Oilers need to target according to one analyst.

Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects revealed that the Detroit Red Wings are entertaining offers on prospect goaltender Sebastian Cossa as they have Trey Augustine waiting in the wings:

“They (Oilers) are looking a little more long term. I was told they’ve contacted Detroit. I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine…that was a non-starter. They have Sebastian Cossa sitting right there.”

Cossa makes a lot of sense for the Oilers given his age, potential and the fact he could come in now and backup Skinner and do a decent job at it too.

In 41 games with Grand Rapids (AHL), Cossa had a 21-15-5 record with a 2.45 GAA and a .911 SV% and added one shutout. He played in one game for the Red Wings in 2024-25 and went 1-0-0 with a 2.67 GAA and .857 SV%.

He’s only 22, and is a Top-15 pick, so the potential is there, it’s just that Detroit has a bit of a logjam with newcomer John Gibson and Cam Talbot, not to mention Augustine.

If the Oilers decide the pull the trigger, they could end up sending someone like Ty Emberson or Vasily Podkolzin the other way, both would add a lot of help to Detroit’s defense and offense respectively, and they are both young enough to work through Detroit’s seemingly forever rebuild.

Emberson, 25, had 13 points in 76 games for the Oilers, while adding a minus-5 rating, 125 hits and 97 blocks in 15:07 TOI.

Podkolzin, 24, had 24 points in 82 games for Edmonton while adding 53 blocks, 211 hits, and a plus-1 rating in only 13:13 TOI.

For Detroit, they could use an influx of youthful talent and either Emberson or Podkolzin makes sense. But it’ll cost them Sebastian Cossa; which is just fine by Edmonton.
