At the MLB trade deadline in 2025, the Detroit Tigers will be exploring the third base trade market. Out of all the available third basemen, there is one who would be an ideal fit for a couple of reasons.
That ideal fit is Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Nick Ziegler of Sports Illustrated presented a trade proposal that would bring the ideal third baseman to Detroit. And the deal he proposed would be a dream scenario for Detroit.
Ziegel’s trade proposal has the Tigers sending right-handed pitcher Jaden Hamm, the Tigers’ 7th-ranked prospect, for Suarez. “The cost for Suarez wouldn’t be cheap,” Ziegler writes, “With Hamm a top prospect in the system.”
While Detroit is giving up a top-ten prospect within the organization, retaining their top prospects and still landing Suarez would be a great scenario. While Hamm is a solid prospect, the addition of Suarez would be too impactful to pass up on.
Suarez is in the final year of his deal, making $15 million this season, and is set to be a free agent. While the Tigers would get just half a season out of Suarez, he could be the missing piece in a World Series run.

So far in 2025, Suarez has been one of the game’s best sluggers. Through 89 games, Suarez has 28 home runs, 82 hits, 53 runs scored, 17 doubles, and 74 RBIs. He’s batting .252 with a .881 OPS, which would be first among Tigers hitters with at least 100 at-bats.
Adding a slugger like Suarez would be the ideal move for the Tigers to make. He’s cheap, for someone who’s so effective at the plate, and is also a realistic option to target. Alex Bregman would be nice, but the Boston Red Sox aren’t expected to trade him.
Suarez is much more likely to be on the move. He’s about to be 34 years old and in the final year of his deal. He’s a perfect trade deadline target for the Tigers, and if this trade proposal from Ziegler were to come true, it’d be a dream scenario for Detroit.
Trading away just Hamm is more than worth landing a slugger as impactful as Suarez. He’d elevate the Tigers’ offense significantly and strengthen the lineup from being one of the best to being one of the most feared come the postseason.
