The Miami Dolphins are evidently looking for some running back depth.
But one player who they requested a workout with didn’t just decline to do it. Instead, he retired.
That’d be Matt Breida, who was reported Thursday as retiring from the NFL, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Fowler’s report indicated that the Dolphins wanted Breida to work out for them, a scenario that could’ve led to a signing. It doesn’t indicate exactly when Miami requested the workout.
Breida is 30, and he opted instead to move on from the NFL after seven seasons. That doesn’t include 2024, when he was in training camp with the San Francisco 49ers but was cut before the season began and didn’t sign with anyone else.

Breida’s 98 NFL games were split between the 49ers, the Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills and the New York Giants.
He totaled 2,652 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in his career. Through the air, Breida added 120 catches for 935 yards and six more TDs.
His best season came in 2018 with the 49ers. He had 1,075 total yards and five touchdowns.
Breida spent the 2020 season with the Dolphins. He played in 12 games, ran 59 times for 254 yards and caught nine passes for 96 yards.

It was quite the career for a guy who was originally undrafted out of Georgia Southern.
He had starred immediately in the Sun Belt Conference, running for 1,485 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first season on the field at Georgia Southern. He went for 1,608 yards and 17 TDs again the next season, then struggled in his senior campaign before grinding his way to the NFL.
Breida was one of the fastest RBs in the NFL even in his final seasons, a player who could always burst into an opening and make something happening.
Now, he’s surging toward the next chapter of his life, and the Dolphins will have to look elsewhere for potential running back depth.
