Dodgers trade idea steals $101M pitcher away from crosstown rival Angels

The Los Angeles Dodgers could be on the hunt for some pitchers near the trade deadline. The team could use some depth and may be able to strike a deal with their crosstown rivals.

The Los Angeles Angels are 25-28, but by the time the trade deadline rolls around, they may be clear sellers. If that’s the case, they could be willing to part with Reid Detmers, who has seen mixed results so far in his career. CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson tabbed Detmers as a potential fit for the Dodgers.

“Detmers is an enigma. The pitch-quality models love him and his fastball-slider combination, and he’s usually good for two to three strikeouts per walk,” wrote Anderson. “Unfortunately, he’s been a well-below-average pitcher from a runs-allowed perspective dating back through last season — and that’s even with the Angels relegating him to the bullpen all year. Other teams are going to try to buy low on Detmers, making this a matter of if/when the Angels decide they’ve had enough.”

Detmers made his debut in 2021. In 2022, he started 25 games, pitching to a 3.77 ERA. In 2023, he was still servicable, but not great. In 2024, his ERA was a staggering 6.70. This year, he has a 7.52 ERA out of the bullpen. He has not been great, but perhaps the Dodgers could buy low on him and use him as a swingman or long relief option.

The Dodgers currently have plenty of pitchers injured, both starters and relievers. If that trend continues, they will need players to eat innings and potentially even start games. Detmers is a low-risk addition with high upside. He is under club control through 2028, and Spotrac projects him to earn an eight-year, $101 million deal when he hits the open market.

His value is low right now, so the Dodgers could try and get him back to the player he was in 2022 without giving up a haul. At worst, he could save the Dodgers’ pitching staff’s arms down the stretch.
