The Los Angeles Dodgers began the 2025 MLB World Series by making the trip up north and out of the United States, as the Toronto Blue Jays are the higher seed and will have home-field advantage.
During Game 1, once the Blue Jays put together a huge lead and were in complete control of the game, the fans in attendance began taunting Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani with a simple but effective chant of, “We don’t need you!”
After the first two games in Toronto, Ohtani was asked about those chants, and as Katie Woo of The Athletic reported, Ohtani shared an unexpected reaction to the chants from the Blue Jays fanbase.

Shohei Ohtani shares unexpected reaction to Blue Jays fans’ ‘we don’t need you!’ chant
Ohtani, despite having tens of thousands of fans chanting that they didn’t need him, was able to appreciate the cleverness of the chant.
It wasn’t just Ohtani that appreciated it, either, as his wife also felt the same.
“It was a really great chant,” Ohtani said, “and my wife really appreciated it.”

It is a clever chant from the Blue Jays faithful, as it’s in mockery of Ohtani deciding to sign with the Dodgers over the Blue Jays in free agency a few years ago.
With Ohtani being the center of the baseball world, this World Series revolving around the two teams he was deciding between at the end of his free agency decision is fitting.

He couldn’t do much to help the Dodgers win in Game 1, as the pitching staff allowed Toronto to tack on nine runs in one inning. In Game 2, Ohtani and the Dodgers cruised to a strong 5-1 win to even the series as it shifts to Los Angeles.
Ohtani is slated to start Game 4 for the Dodgers. While there won’t be any clever chants from Blue Jays fans while he’s on the mound, if the series makes it to a Game 6, the Toronto faithful will continue to let Ohtani hear it whenever he’s up to bat.
The “We don’t need you!” chant was an iconic sports moment and helped make Game 1 of the World Series an incredible way to begin what’s shaping up to be an incredible showdown between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays.
