The Los Angeles Dodgers are 16-9 to start the season and could make a blockbuster addition near the trade deadline. They already have a surplus of starting pitchers, but could add another ace.
When healthy, the Dodgers rotation figures to feature Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Rōki Sasaki, Tyler Glasnow, Shoehi Ohtani and Clayton Kershaw. However, they still have Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin and other capable starters as well. It’s safe to say that starting pitching is not a need for the Dodgers.
However, the Dodgers’ rotation has shown that they cannot be relied on to stay healthy. Glasnow and Yamamoto missed significant time last year. Sasaki has had elbow injuries in the past. Snell has already missed time this year. Ohtani and Kershaw have to even make their season debuts on the mound for the Dodgers. Newsweek’s Andrew Wright suggested that the Dodgers trade for Sandy Alcántara of the Miami Marlins. Even though Alcántara recently had Tommy John surgery, he has shown he can be a workhorse.
“It’s all but certain that this will finally be the season in which the Marlins finally ship Alcántara elsewhere and it feels like the Dodgers would be the first team on the phone with the Marlins front office,” wrote Wright. “Alcántara missed all of last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and things have not gone great for him in his first season back from injury.”
Alcántara signed a five-year, $56 million deal in 2022 and has a club option for 2027. He won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022. Even though he has struggled so far, there is no doubt that when he is at his best, he is one of the best players in the league. Perhaps a change of scenery could be key in getting him back on track.

The Marlins do not have winning aspirations. However, on the Dodgers, the only goal is the World Series. Pitching in that environment, surrounded by other elite starters, could be great for Alcántara.
