Dodgers could move on from Dustin May, trade for $73 million All-Star

The Los Angeles Dodgers could be on the hunt for pitching upgrades near the trade deadline in order to reach their World Series aspirations. They could call the Minnesota Twins to try and acquire Pablo López.

López has a 2.40 ERA through his first eight starts and could be a key player for the Dodgers. With Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Rōki Sasaki all injured, there is no telling what the Dodgers’ rotation will look like throughout the season. All three, plus Shohei Ohtani, are expected to pitch again this year, but there’s no telling how reliable they can be to stay healthy.

López dealt with a minor injury this year, but is otherwise very reliable. He has made 32 starts in three consecutive seasons. FanSided’s Katrina Stebbins tabbed him as a trade fit for the Dodgers.

“The Twins look like potential contenders right now, but the Wild Card race is going to be tight in the American League, with most of the AL Central and West floating right around .500,” wrote Stebbins. “If the Twins’ hold loosens and allows the likes of the Astros or Rangers to creep in, they could look to sell. López has a far more lucrative contract than (Erick) Fedde; he’s owed $73.5 million through 2027. It could solve an early problem the Dodgers, with Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May set to hit free agency at the end of the season.”

López is a former All-Star and is under control past this season. Players like Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin have been good for the Dodgers, but there is no denying that López is a better player. Making this trade now could not only set the Dodgers up for another deep October run, but also for next season.

A healthy rotation of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Snell, Ohtani, Glasnow, Sasaki and López would be a force to be reckoned with throughout the postseason and the rest of the regular season. The trade deadline is on July 31, so the Dodgers could be monitoring the Twins’ record until then.
