Dodgers could dump beloved starter to Mariners after latest free agency splash

The Los Angeles Dodgers have had a successful offseason after winning the World Series in 2024. They signed Korean Baseball Organization star Hye-Seong Kim and could end up parting ways with a long-time starter as a result.

After Kim’s arrival, the Dodgers have six middle infielders. Tommy Edman, Mookie Betts, Lux, Kim, Chris Taylor and Miguel Rojas can all occupy infield roles. According to Los Angeles Times Jack Harris, the Dodgers plan to use Kim in a utility role with Lux playing second base. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi revealed that the Seattle Mariners have “checked with the Dodgers” for Lux’s availability.

“The Mariners have checked with the Dodgers about the availability of Gavin Lux, as we discussed on (MLB Network) this morning,” Morosi wrote on X.

The Mariners have been desperately looking to add offensive talent. Lux slashed .251/.320/.383 last season. He has played in 412 games for the Dodgers in his career. Lux is potentially too valuable to waste away on the Dodgers bench. He has club control and is projected to sign a four-year, $27 million deal in free agency.

The Mariners have an influx of pinching talent and could deal some to the Dodgers. Lux along with a prospect could be enough to get Luis Castillo from the Mariners. With the addition of Kim, the Dodgers may not need Lux at all. Kim could be the everyday second baseman. He plays elite defense and slashed .326/.383/.458 with a career-high 11 home runs last season in the KBO.
