Dodgers blockbuster trade idea would land $33 million Blue Jays two-time All-Star

It’s hard to imagine that the Los Angeles Dodgers might not be done adding this winter–but then again, it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers we’re talking about.

It’s been another banner offseason for the Dodgers, who have added, among others, Blake Snell, Teoscar Hernández, Roki Sasaki, and Tanner Scott. They’re stacked at every position, but that doesn’t mean they won’t continue to be opportunistic.

If the Dodgers are going to upgrade at any other position, it may be the middle infield, where Mookie Betts looks to be attempting a full year at shortstop for the first time and second base could be a rotating cast of characters led by Korean signee Hyeseong Kim.

What if the Toronto Blue Jays decide to suddenly sell low on two-time All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette, though? His $33 million extension is up at the end of the season and Toronto seems unlikely to extend both Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

In a recent YouTube video, content creator Jim Riley discussed an online trade proposal that saw Bichette headed to the Dodgers for right-handed pitchers Michael Grove and Dustin May.

“Michael Grove is really the significant piece here, because Michael Grove has the longest runway,” Riley said. “I hate to say it, but May is kind of the throw-in to get the deal done if you want Bo Bichette.”

“(Max) Muncy stays at third, Bo is either your second baseman or your shortstop, and he may be better as your second baseman.”

Though Riley characterized the deal as an “overpay,” on the whole, it’s certainly reasonable to think that the Blue Jays would want a two-for-one swap to part with Bichette. He’d also be sold at a low point in his value, which is great for the Dodgers, but makes a deal more unlikely.

Do the Dodgers even need Bichette at this point? It depends on where you’re standing. They probably didn’t “need” Kim or Kirby Yates, but they landed them both anyway. Bichette at his best is much more valuable than those two have proven to be.

But at some point, the Dodgers should start getting comfortable with their roster as it is heading into Spring Training. That is, until injuries mount again, and by midseason, the trade talks start heating right back up again.
