Dodgers blockbuster trade idea ships $3 million rising star to Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers have problems that make them the envy of 29 other Major League Baseball teams.

At this point, the Dodgers have more good players than they know what to do with. The signing of 25-year-old Korean star Hyeseong Kim only exacerbates that problem.

Kim, a speedster with great contact skills, is expected to play a super-utility role, with his focus likely on second base. That leaves Gavin Lux, the team’s most frequent starting second baseman during the 2024 season, in a precarious position.

Lux had an excellent second half (after a dreadful start to the year) and looked to be solidifying himself as a big-league starter. But the Dodgers may no longer be able to offer him that opportunity, so would they consider trading him to their World Series opponents?

The New York Yankees don’t have a clear-cut starting second baseman next season after Gleyber Torres’ departure. Zach Pressnell of Newsweek recently proposed that the Yankees could be the ideal team to trade Lux to before the season starts.

“The Yankees are desperate for an affordable infielder with experience and a solid bat,” Pressnell wrote. “That’s exactly what Lux would give the Bronx Bombers.”

“The Dodgers may not want to send such a valuable infielder over to the same team they played in the World Series last year, but the Yankees would likely issue a very intriguing offer.”

Lux, who was once considered the top prospect in the Dodgers system, is now 27 and has just two years of team control remaining. He can be a productive big-league player, but if the Dodgers aren’t going to give him that chance, they’d be wise to recoup some value for him in a trade.

It’s not as though shipping Lux to the Yankees is imminent or even urgent for the Dodgers to consider. But their ears should be curious about what New York might be offering.
