The Los Angeles Dodgers have added a new superstar to their starting rotation this offseason. The addition of Blake Snell could mean the end for a hometown starter in Los Angeles. He could be a pivot option for the Boston Red Sox if they can’t land Corbin Burnes.
The Dodgers signed Blake Snell to a five-year, $182 million deal. The move likely means Jack Flaherty will not be back with the team. However, he could leave Los Angeles for Boston if they miss on Burnes and look elsewhere.
The Red Sox already added one Dodgers starter when they signed Walker Beuhler to a one-year, $21.05 million deal. The Red Sox are not necessarily scrambling to add another starter after trading for Garrett Crochet and signing Beuhler. However, they are considered suitors for Burnes.
Flaherty would be a cheaper alternative to round out the Red Sox rotation. Flaherty could be a better option than Lucas Giolito or Kutter Crawford. Spotrac projects Flaherty to sign a three-year, $63 million deal in free agency. Flaherty is a Los Angeles native and grew up a Dodgers fan. He was a key part of the Dodgers World Series run.
The Dodgers getting healthier in their rotation means they may no longer view Flaherty as a need. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are trying to go all-in after missing out on Juan Soto. If they cannot add Burnes it is not out of the question that they would turn to the next best starter available. He had a 3.17 ERA in 28 starts last season.
