Dillian Whyte and Hughie Fury in talks for a summer stadium showdown

Heavyweight world title contenders Dillian Whyte (31-3, 21 KOs) and Hughie Fury (29-3, 16 KOs) are currently in talks for a summer showdown in Galway, Ireland, it’s been reported.

GBM Sports promoter, Izzy Asif, said, “GBM Sports will be staging an event at Pearse Stadium, Galway in July and Hughie Fury will be on the card.

“We have several names in contention, all of whom are well known. Dillian Whyte is the frontrunner for that slot, as we believe that is a fight which would deliver massively for the fans in attendance and watching around around the world.

“We look forward to confirming further details of our Galway event in due course.”

30-year-old cousin of Tyson Fury, Hughie has been slowly rebuilding since his last loss to Alexander Povetkin in 2019. He has won six on the spin since, but a two-and-a-half year period of inactivity was sandwiched in the middle of that run, due to injuries and skin problems.

The world title contender is eyeing all the big names, publicly putting himself forward for the Joseph Parker fight in February when Daniel Dubois pulled out, but Martin Bakole won that lottery ticket instead.

Dillian Whyte’s career has also stalled recently, due to bad luck and injuries. The 36-year-old was supposed to be fighting this weekend against Joe Joyce but was forced to withdraw after suffering from a hand injury.

In August 2023, he was due to face his rival Anthony Joshua in a lucrative rematch, but adverse findings in his pre-fight drug tests saw the bout cancelled on fight week, an offence that he was later cleared of many months later.

The Brixton ‘Body Snatcher’ fought twice in 2024, forcing both Christian Hammer and Ebenezer Tetteh to retire in rounds three and seven, respectively.

The Jamaican-born Londoner challenged Hughie’s cousin, Tyson Fury, for his WBC world heavyweight title in April 2024 at Wembley Stadium but was sensationally stopped in the sixth stanza, courtesy of a right uppercut, a punch he has always been susceptible to. Both Joshua and Povetkin stopped him with the same shot.

Dillian Whyte vs Hughie Fury in just three to four months time would be an exciting match-up in the heavyweight division, with the winner sure to be catapulted into a big fight later in the year.

Another GBM Sports fighter guaranteed to appear on the card is popular ‘Galway Boy’ Kieran Molloy.

The unbeaten welterweight prospect recently said, “I’m working in England now but I’m still a Galway boy and we want an outdoor show in the summer. Everybody gets behind their own and that’s the way we are down in Galway. That’s our culture. It’s in our nature.

“We had one fight in Galway and, within 24 hours, we’d sold out a 1,000 seater venue. I know for sure that we’d fill it out.”
