Detroit Lions get encouraging update with Green Bay Packers’ dominant win over Washington Commanders

The Detroit Lions looked brutal for much of Week 1’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

Good news, Lions fans: It was much of the same for the Washington Commanders in Lambeau Field on Thursday Night Football.

And no, it doesn’t mean the NFC North title defense will be any easier for the Lions. The Packers are now a convincing 2-0 and don’t look like slowing down.

But it does mean that maybe there’s still room for optimism in Detroit.

The Lions scored only a late, meaningless touchdown (on an impressive one-handed snag from Isaac TeSlaa) in their loss to Green Bay.

The running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for less than 50 yards.

Jared Goff looked all sorts of out of sorts.

It was just a bad showing.

But maybe that had as much to do with the Packers’ defense as Detroit’s offense. Because Washington, led by QB Jayden Daniels, is supposed to be potent offensively, too, and they looked anything but.

The Lions get a chance this week to redeem themselves at least a bit. They take on the Chicago Bears, a team that gave up three TDs just in the fourth quarter on Monday night to J.J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings.

If it’s a slog again for Detroit, that’s a brutal sign.

But if the Lions get rolling, then the real moral of the story is simply that the Packers are really, really good.
