Departed Arsenal star to make La Liga return

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has made a host of squad changes as part of the ongoing summer transfer window.

Along with new arrivals, the Gunners have also parted ways with some key names including a departure for veteran midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 32-year-old star was reportedly in talks with Arsenal to extend his contract, which expired at the end of June, but an agreement could not be reached.

Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for a reported €50m [$57m] fee and made 167 appearances for the Gunners, during which he netted nine goals and seven assists.

After departing the Emirates Stadium as a free agent, the Ghana star is now reportedly ready to return to La Liga.

Partey is set to join Villarreal for the 2025/26 season, according to The Athletic.

Why did former Arsenal star Thomas Partey join Villarreal?

Partey has reportedly undergone a medical and is anticipated to pen a two-year contract at Villarreal until 2027.

The report also suggests Partey’s interest in joining Villarreal stems from the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League on his return to Spain.

Villarreal concluded the 2024/25 season with a fifth-place finish in La Liga.

If Partey and Villarreal close the deal soon, the midfielder may have a chance to face his former club in the Gunners’ preseason friendly against the Spanish side on August 6.
