Denny Hamlin concerned about Kyle Busch after Richmond

Former longtime teammates at Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin said he felt actual concern for Kyle Busch after what happened on Saturday night at Richmond Raceway, a multi-car incident in which the two-time Cup Series champion had two separate points of contact.

Busch also had a pit road speeding penalty in a disaster of a race where teammate Austin Dillon won and made the playoffs before he did in equal equipment.

Speaking on Actions Detrimental, Hamlin said he actually wanted to reach out.

“Speaking of Kyle Busch, I was going to text him, ‘Are you okay?’ It was so weird, we were under caution and I felt, BOOM, I’m like, ‘What the hell?’ I guess he was warming his tires up and just fucking door slammed the shit out of me. … He is hitting everything! He ran into us under caution. Unintentional, obviously. Then, down the backstretch, we didn’t really talk about the big wreck, but I don’t know. … Well, I wanted to be genuine about it, like ‘Hey bud, how you doing? Doing okay?’ He just wiped out a few cars, and then the 9 was coming by and he clipped him on the way out. I don’t know, man. It’s tough to say, it just, it doesn’t, I don’t know. Doesn’t look right.”

He did also a caveat about the contact with Chase Elliott.

“He wasn’t told about the 9 until the last second… at that point he’s just trying to get clear of the mayhem.”

Still, it was a bit of a mess of a race during a mess of a season and tenure at Richard Childress
