The Dallas Cowboys weren’t a Super Bowl contender with Micah Parsons, but they could’ve become one if they re-signed him and acquired more elite talent over the next few years. However, that wasn’t meant to be.
Parsons publicly requested a trade on August 1, expressing frustration with how Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones handled his contract negotiations, via social media. The three-time All-Pro was on the last year of his deal, and he didn’t want to play this season without long-term security.
Jones honored Parsons’ request on August 28, sending him to the Green Bay Packers for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks. The Packers then made the Penn State alum the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history by signing him to a four-year, $188 million contract.
Now, Green Bay is 2-0 and ranks fourth-best in the NFL with 15.5 points allowed per game. Will Parsons give it the boost it needs to win the Super Bowl?
Cowboys legend DeMarcus Ware weighed in on Thursday, via Yahoo Sports!’ Andrew Siciliano.
“The way that they look right now, if they’re gelling and playing in the latter part of the season, like they’re playing right now, they have a good chance of winning the Super Bowl,” the two-time NFL sacks leader admitted.
“I hate – I really don’t want that to come out of my mouth, but in talking about the Green Bay Packers, they have a good chance with Micah in winning the Super Bowl because he is that missing piece,” he continued.

Packers are in better position to compete long-term than Cowboys
Jones showed with the Parsons decision that he’s more committed to building the offense than the defense. The longtime executive signed wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million extension in August 2024 before inking quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240 million extension just days later. However, he wasn’t as generous with his lone defensive superstar.
It’s no coincidence that the Cowboys are tied for 27th in the NFL with 30.5 points allowed per game, while they’re fifth with 30 points scored per game. Although they’ve only played two contests, they’ve shown that they’re an offense-heavy team that could’ve used a talent like Parsons to provide balance.
On the other hand, the Packers are sixth with a 27-point scoring average in addition to having an elite defense thus far. Parsons ranks third on the team with 1.5 sacks, so he’s already pulling his weight.
Green Bay has to prove that it can maintain its current level of performance, but its current setup with Parsons suggests that it will be a more successful and balanced team than Dallas for the foreseeable future.
