Deebo Samuel real name, explained: The story behind Commanders WR’s unique nickname

There likely won’t ever be another NFL player named Deebo.

So at least Deebo Samuel has that going for him.

At this point, Deebo is a well-established player. The Washington Commanders liked him enough to acquire him in a trade in the offseason from the San Francisco 49ers.

And that means Deebo goes from one coast to another, a whole new chance to spread his nickname’s uniqueness across the football world.

Deebo Samuel’s full name is Tyshun Raequan Samuel Sr. 

How did Deebo Samuel get his nickname?

Deebo Samuel’s father gave him his nickname.

According to the Commanders’ team website, when Samuel was a child, he gave people a look that reminded his father Galen of the bully character from the 1995 movie, Friday.

The nickname stuck.

“When I was 12 years old, Little League football, no one ever called me Tyshun besides my stepmom,” Samuel told ESPN in 2020. “Now, it translates over to the football field, the mindset I have, one guy is not going to tackle me, and the first guy is always going to feel the pain.”

Deebo Samuel’s other nickname

According to the Commanders website, Deebo actually has a second nickname.

His mother calls him “Sweet Feet.”

That just points to his quickness and agility on the football field.

Commanders fans certainly hope Deebo can bring his sweet feet to the nation’s capital.
