The Great American Race beckons off in the distance, yearning for a new talisman to capture one of American motorsports’ greatest prizes.
The Daytona 500 is unlike any other event in the Cup Series calendar. As one of NASCAR’s crown jewels, the event is more spectacle than race. It’s easy to see why — between seismic collisions and last-lap passes, Daytona International Speedway offers an experience few other sporting events can boast of.
The 40-car field will be littered with star power, each driver hoping that 2025 is the year when they etch their name into NASCAR history.
Given the unpredictable nature of the proceedings, they all will have faith in notching a solid finish on those hallowed Daytona grounds. Recent history suggests they’re correct in their assessment — Austin Dillon, Austin Cindric, Michael McDowell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. have all notched Daytona 500 wins over the past six years, for example.
Surprises come often from Daytona, a 2 1/2 mile track of land that is as wondrous as it is wicked. Fan won’t have to wait too long to see shocks take shape, either. After all, the Daytona 500’s qualifying process calls on racers to battle with one another in a pair of duels to determine the starting order come Sunday.
The result of Thursday’s outing could go a long way in determining the final results of Sunday’s affair. In 2024, Christopher Bell nabbed a Daytona Duel win. He proceeded to place third in the 200-lapper three days later.
