Daytona 500 purse, payout breakdown: How much prize money will the winner make in 2025?

The Daytona 500 is a scornful sorceress, wondrous at some times, harrowing at others. The 2 1/2 mile surface has gobbled up more cars than most over the past 67 years. And yet, it’s teeming with vigor, particularly when legions of fans scales its walls.

The Great American Race is a sight like few others in the world of motorsports. Whereas outfits like Formula One and IndyCar tend to avoid collisions, the Cup Series embraces them.

Maybe it’s for this reason that the bout is so eventful. The challenges posed across 200 laps (500 miles) are plenty. The opportunities to pass opposition drivers are few. And the risks are impossible to ignore.

The Big One looms like a hawk over the whole of the 40-car field. An equal and opposite force looms too, outfitted in green and gold: money.

Here’s what you need to know about the 2025 Daytona 500 purse.

What is the Daytona 500 purse for 2025?

Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass reported that the total purse for the 2025 Daytona 500 is $30,331,250. That’s up more than $2 million from the 2024 figure, which sat at $28,035,991.

This marks the third straight year in which the Daytona 500 purse has been publicly reported.

Figures weren’t made available for 2021 or ’22, but the purse was $23.6 million in ’20 when the race was held weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic put the NASCAR Cup Series season on hold.

The Daytona 500 purse has risen by more than $10 million since 2015 when it was only $18 million, and the jump from last year’s figure continues the upward trend.

How much money does a driver get for winning the Daytona 500?

It’s unclear quite how much the winner of the Daytona 500 receives from the overall purse. The last year NASCAR disclosed the winner’s prize was in 2015 when Joey Logano captured the checkered flag — and $1.58 million, too.

In 2023, Pockrass reported that winners field between $1.5 million and $2 million in earnings at Daytona. That figure is dependent on a number of factors, including an allocation based on three-year season-ending points performance of the charter. If a winner hails from Team Penske or Hendrick Motorsports, they’ll likely net more money than if a winner belongs to Rick Ware Racing or Kaulig Racing, for example.

All told, the winner will only receive a small portion of the $30 million jackpot. But the glory that comes with lifting the checkered flag at the Great American Race often serves as the primary motivator of drivers’ showings at the
