Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey had his first interview since his exit press conference during his appearance on Rights to Ricky Sanchez: A Sixers Podcast. Morey discussed various Sixers topics, including where they will go with their three stars.
The Sixers’ “Big Three” of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey played a total of 15 games together, as all three dealt with injuries throughout the season. Their unavailability contributed to the Sixers’ terrible season. However, Morey declared that all three are sticking around despite what happened.
“We are committed to Paul, Maxey, and Embiid,” Morey said. This isn’t exactly welcome news for Sixers fans because, injuries and all, those three didn’t really fit with each other on the basketball court.
Note that the Sixers were 7-8 in the 15 games those three played together. The trio also shared a net rating of minus-0.5 while playing together. It’s not a big sample size, but it’s still not a promising result. George and Embiid will only get older, and there are questions regarding how much longer either can play at a high level.
For the record, back in 2019, when Morey was running the Houston Rockets’ front office, he went on public record saying Chris Paul wasn’t going anywhere before the Rockets traded Paul to the Oklahoma City Thunder not too long after that. Whether Morey was lying or not, there’s evidence that he will trade a player if he thinks it’s best for the team, even if he contradicts himself.
For now, the Sixers’ three highest-paid players will stay where they are, but that doesn’t mean things can’t change.
