There will be many questions about the Dallas Mavericks lineup with a little over a month away from the 2025-26 NBA season beginning. Kyrie Irving will not be ready for the start of the season because he is still recovering from a torn ACL.
D’Angelo Russell will be the starting point guard most likely for Dallas. Number one overall pick Cooper Flagg will most likely start at small forward for the Mavericks. Is there a chance that he can play the point guard position in the absence of Kyrie to begin the 2025-26 NBA season?
Dallas Mavericks Cooper Flagg Has a Chance to Play Point Guard This Season
Christian Clark of the Athletic had four burning questions about the Mavericks entering this season. One of his burning questions was how much ‘Point Flagg’ will we see? He responded,
“Early in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s career in Milwaukee, then-Bucks coach Jason Kidd gave the “Greek Freak” plenty of on-ball reps. Antetokounmpo said it helped spur his development.
“He trusted me,” Antetokounmpo said in 2018. “He put the ball in my hands. He pushed me to be great.”
Kidd seems ready to try something similar with Flagg, the rookie who won’t turn 19 until December. Kidd in June said he wanted to put Flagg at point guard in an effort to push him. The two games Flagg played at summer league in Las Vegas suggested Kidd wasn’t kidding. Flagg got Dallas into its offense early and often.
The 6-foot-8 Flagg is power forward-sized, but he might not play that position much this season because of the frontcourt pieces the Mavericks already have around him. Flagg displayed excellent passing chops at Duke, where he led his team in assists. He’s a good lob thrower — a nice skill to have on a team with Davis, Lively and Gafford as vertical threats.”
Flagg playing point guard a lot early on in the season would give this offense a different look. With Irving and Anthony Davis potentially not being available for the beginning of the season, Flagg might be the best player on the roster. He will probably play point guard when Russell is on the bench.
When Irving does return from injury, Flagg will probably not play point guard as often. Head coach Jason Kidd is trying to get creative with him because he knows what kind of potential he has at the NBA level.
