At one point in time, Trevon Diggs was one of the most promising, and productive, cornerbacks in the entire NFL. Diggs led the league with 11 interceptions and two interception touchdowns in 2021. He was named a First Team All-Pro that same year and was named to consecutive Pro Bowls in ’21 and ’22.
However, injury issues have hampered Diggs in recent years, limiting both his availability and production. He played in just two total games in 2023 and has appeared in just six this season. As a result, he was recently listed as a surprise cut candidate by Dan Graziano of ESPN.

Graziano pointed to some new cornerback depth in Dallas combined with the relatively low dead cap hit that would be incurred by the Cowboys if they released Diggs as rationale.
“The Cowboys drafted cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. in April, and while Diggs has three years and $57 million left on his contract, none of that money is guaranteed,” Graziano wrote. “The Cowboys would incur just $5.88 million in dead money if they released him. … Diggs has been working his way back from injury and still has a chance to show enough over the rest of the season to convince Dallas to keep him. But at this point, it’s no sure thing that they do.”
Diggs is still just 27 years old, so he should still have plenty of productive play in front of him. However, is he worth the hefty price tag that the Cowboys signed him to? Probably not. If Dallas is disillusioned with Diggs’ ability to stay on the field, parting ways with him would probably be the best course of action, and doing so would save the organization some serious cash moving forward.
Diggs could come back this season and play well enough that the Cowboys don’t want to move on from him, as Graziano pointed out, but that happening is far from a guarantee. He hasn’t played since Oct. 12, so by the time he returns it will be over two full months since he played in an NFL game. It could take a bit for him to knock the rust off and by then, the season could be over.
So, it remains to be seen exactly what the future holds for Diggs. The Cowboys will have a plethora of questions to answer over the offseason, and what to do with Diggs can be added to the list.
