The New York Knicks lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals. Then, they decided to fire head coach Tom Thibodeau in a bit of a puzzling move.
Now, the Knicks are in search of a new coach.
Plenty of candidates have been mentioned, including former Nuggets coach Michael Malone, UConn’s Dan Hurley, former Villanova coach Jay Wright and former Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins, among others.
Another one has emerged, although this one is currently a head coach in the NBA: Jason Kidd.
As it turns out, the Knicks are expected to request permission to interview the current Dallas Mavericks coach, per NBA insider Marc Stein.
The New York Knicks are expected to formally request permission to speak to the Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd about their coaching vacancy in coming days, league sources say.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon previously mentioned Kidd as a possibility, and now Stein confirms such rumblings.
Kidd has spent the past four seasons as the Mavericks’ head coach, which included taking them to the NBA Finals last postseason. But recent moves such as trading away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers might not have sat too well with Kidd.
Plus, Kidd played with the Knicks in 2012-13, which was his final season as a player in the NBA.
Leaving the Mavericks to go to the Knicks would be quite the move for Kidd, would leave Dallas scrambling for an answer and would be a shocking twist in the league.
But as it stands, it is now a legitimate possibility, and it will be interesting to see if Dallas gives Kidd the green light or not.
