While the Chicago Cubs are riding a four-year playoff drought, this group looks poised to be a legitimate threat in the National League. The 2025 team is 35-21 and three games up on the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.
That is despite some overall uncertainty with the starting pitching, particularly after the season-ending injury to 2023 All-Star Justin Scheele. This team, however, is taking on a balanced approach with its lineup that has led to the highest-scoring offense in Major League Baseball.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller subsequently gave the Cubs their deserved props in a recent article. To much of the public’s shock, Chicago’s starting 9 was ranked as the best unit in the league through two months. Miller, in particular, highlights this group’s two MVPs, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker.
Tucker is on pace for his best career stat line yet and squarely in the middle of his prime. Meanwhile, Crow-Armstrong is just 23 years old and already looks like a superstar in the making. Miller summarizes the impact these two have had while slightly distinguishing one from the other so far in 2025.
“There are two players with at least a dozen home runs and a dozen stolen bases, and they both happen to play in the Cubs outfield,” Miller states. “If forced to pick just one here, got to go with PCA for what might be the most valuable defense in all of baseball. But they are both hitting .280 for the highest-scoring team.”
The Cubs were the only franchise in the top four with two players named as MVPs through two months. This lineup is deep and versatile, and its start this season is not a fluke. Tucker, Crow-Armstrong, Dansby Swanson, and Seiya Suzuki are all hitting more than 10 home runs, while several other talented players are gradually rounding into form.

The front office does have a weakness with the starting pitching rotation that will need to be addressed eventually if the Cubs want to become a true contender. That being said, this group has the makings of being the franchise’s best team since 2016. And every Cubs fan knows how that team did.
