Cubs-Rays trade pitch would bring All-Star infielder to Chicago

The Chicago Cubs are off to a solid start to the season. However, they could be in the market for some offensive upgrades around the trade deadline.

Even though the Cubs have players at first and third base, AthlonSports’ Jon Conahan proposed the idea of the Cubs acquiring Tampa Bay Rays infielder Yandy Díaz.

“Chicago needs to improve its offense, and while the Cubs have set players at first and third base, adding a bat like Diaz is far too challenging to pass up on,” wrote Conahan. “Not only does he have some pop in his bat, but he gets on base at an above-average level, evident by his .330 average in 2023.”

Díaz was an All-Star in 2023. He won the American League Batting Title and also won a Silver Slugger. His right-handed bat could be a real asset to the Cubs lineup. He is making $10 million this season and has a $12 million club option for next season.

“Diaz will be one of the top names to watch at the deadline,” wrote Conahan. “If any team needs a first or third baseman, he should be at the top of their list. However, the Cubs have a sound enough farm system to realistically complete any deal. If they love what the 33-year-old could bring to their lineup, it’s very doable. He’s a career 125 OPS+ bat, a Silver Slugger winner, an All-Star, and much more. There wouldn’t be many better options for the Cubs to consider if he’s available.”

The Rays could very well become sellers at the trade deadline. Díaz will have a strong market, but he could be a big part for the Cubs in the NL Central.
