The Chicago Cubs are heading in the wrong direction as October baseball rapidly approaches. Chicago still holds a firm position in the National League Wild Card standings, but its pitching has been inconsistent, Kyle Tucker is on the Injured List with a calf problem that no one really knows the severity of, and the Cubs’ star players are slumping at the wrong time.
One of the star players who is slumping at the moment is Seiya Suzuki, who had a stellar first half of 2025 and was considered one of the biggest all-star snubs.
Will Chicago let go of Suzuki?
Seiya Suzuki signed a five-year, $85 million deal with the Chicago Cubs before recording his first full season in the big leagues. He now has one year left on that deal for approximately a $19 million cap hit.
However, the Cubs also have their top two prospects, both outfielders. seemingly ready for everyday MLB at-bats. Owen Caissie has already seen a handful of MLB plate appearances, and Kevin Alcantara isn’t far behind.
Jordan Campbell of “Cubbies Crib” seems to believe that Suzuki may be on his way out of Chicago if his slump doesn’t get busted:
“Plenty of decisions lie ahead for the Cubs over the next two years as nearly their entire core are without a contract after the 2026 season. The decision with Suzuki is looking easier with each passing day. With Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcantara waiting for an extended runway at the Major League level, it feels like the Cubs won’t shy away from moving on from Suzuki after next season.
Suzuki has just two home runs since mid-July, and both his batting average and on-base percentage are headed toward career low marks.
The options that Chicago’s front office could explore include trying to find a trade suitor that will want Suzuki. As bad as his recent slump has been, he still has 27 home runs and 91 RBIs on the season. His OPS+ is also 127, which is well above average, but those numbers may be more indicative of the first half of Suzuki, rather than the last couple of months.
