Cubs named trade fit for Angels’ rebounding third baseman

The Chicago Cubs are 33-21 this season and hold a three-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.

Chicago has won eight of its last 10 games and don’t show any signs of slowing down. The offense is one of the best in Major League Baseball and the pitching is solid.

Besides pitching upgrades, the Cubs don’t really need to upgrade anywhere. Rookie Matt Shaw was recalled by the team last week and has made an immediate impact offensively and defensively at third base.

However, if the Cubs want to add more depth at the position that already has Jon Berti and Vidal Brujan on the bench, there is an external option available.

The Los Angeles Angels are likely to shop third baseman Yoan Moncada at the trade deadline. The Angels are three games under .500 and sit in fourth place in the American League West.

R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports released an article previewing the trade deadline that listed three potential fits for the former No. 1 MLB prospect: the Cubs, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers.

Moncada, 30, is having a good year after playing only 12 games for the Chicago White Sox in 2024. Moncada has four home runs and 17 RBI while slashing .221/.333/.442 in 26 games this season.

The batting average is low, but he is hitting the ball hard, drawing walks, and his .775 OPS is the highest it has been since 2021.

Considering that the Angels don’t seem close to competing in the playoffs for some time, they will probably look to move other veterans like left-handed pitcher Reid Detmers at this year’s trade deadline.
