The Chicago Cubs are currently leading Major League Baseball in total runs scored, but could improve their offense by trading for disgruntled Boston Red Sox star third baseman Rafael Devers.
Devers, 28, has been publicly disgruntled and frustrated at the Red Sox since being moved from third base to designated hitter after the team signed Alex Bregman. The three-time All-Star made it known that he did not want to play any position other than third base, a sentiment he’s maintained despite Boston’s current need for a first baseman after an injury to Triston Casas.
Fox Sports listed the Cubs as one of the top landing spots for Devers if he requests a trade or if the Red Sox elect to part ways with the third baseman.
“On the other hand, this is a Cubs franchise that hasn’t made the playoffs in five years, is looking to get over the hump as a core and could use a long-term answer at the hot corner,” according to Fox Sports. “Devers would put them over the top. Jon Berti and Nicky Lopez can hold their own, but the Cubs could also use more offense from the hot corner, and Devers would likely present the best possible third baseman attainable via trade — should it reach a breaking point with Boston.”
“With Kyle Tucker now in the mix and veterans like Seiya Suzuki, Dansby Swanson and Ian Happ present, Devers would add a player who fits Chicago’s timeline and give them both a long-term piece to the puzzle and another proven hitter to complement budding stars like Crow-Armstrong and Busch.”

It’s unclear how the Devers situation will play out in Boston, but if he is put on the trade block, he could be a great addition to the Cubs roster. The only question mark that would likely make Chicago second-guess trading for Devers would be a possible massive extension for Kyle Tucker this upcoming offseason.
