The Chicago Cubs opened the 2025 MLB season with a rookie at third base, the promising Matt Shaw.
If the latest free agent rumors are legitimate, the Cubs may go in a very different direction for Opening Day 2026.
MLB insider Francys Romero wrote this on X on Sunday morning:
“The Cubs continue to explore the third-base market in free agency, and Eugenio Suárez is one of the names to watch in the coming days, according to multiple sources.”
Suarez split the 2025 season with the Diamondbacks and Mariners.
In Arizona, Suarez hit 36 home runs. He added 13 more homers after being traded to Seattle at the deadline in July.

He’s a veteran with a lot of pop, and he even hit a four-HR game for the Diamondbacks.
A Suarez signing would raise questions about Shaw.
But the Cubs did use Shaw at second base some in 2025 — except that’s Nico Hoerner’s spot.
Really, a Suarez signing puts Shaw in limbo. Would he become a trade candidate? Would Hoerner become a trade option to make room for Shaw over there?
It’s hard to say.
On paper, Suarez would be a solid signing for the Cubs.
But if they get Suarez, it likely won’t be the last move they make, because they’ll be creating a logjam in the infield.
