Crystal Palace vs. Liverpool score: Community Shield result, stats as Salah miss helps Eagles win on penalties

Dean Henderson was Crystal Palace’s Wembley hero once again as Oliver Glasner’s side beat Liverpool on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Community Shield.

Henderson saved a spot-kick from Omar Marmoush as Palace defeated Manchester City 1-0 to win their first FA Cup in May, and he thwarted Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott after Mohammed Salah ballooned over to bring more silverware back to Selhurst Park.

Palace youngster Justin Devenny clattered the decisive penalty into the top corner after Borna Sosa passed up the opportunity to finish things from Palace’s fourth attempt, with their goal-scorers in the 90 minutes Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr netting either side of Alisson saving from Eberechi Eze.

Liverpool’s new signings made their mark during an entertaining contest but Palace, who sent out the same XI that triumphed in the cup final three months ago, could not be shaken.

Liverpool 2 Ekitike 4′ Frimpong 21′ 2

Venue: Wembley Stadium, London
Referee: Chris Kavanagh

Starting lineups:

Crystal Palace (3-4-3, right to left): 1. Dean Henderson (GK) — 26. Chris Richards, 5. Maxence Lacroix, 6. Marc Guehi (55. Justin Devenny) — 2. Daniel Munoz, 20. Adam Wharton (8. Jefferson Lerma), 18, Daichi Kamada (19 Will Hughes), 3. Tyrick Mitchell (24. Borna Sosa) — 7. Ismaila Sarr, 9. Jean-Philippe Mateta, 10. Eberechi Eze

Liverpool (4-2-3-1, right to left): 1. Alisson (GK) — 30. Jeremie Frimpong, 4. Virgil van Dijk, 5. Ibrahima Konate, 6. Milos Kerkez (26. Andy Robertson) — 17. Curtis Jones (3. Wataru Endo), 8. Dominik Szoboszlai — 11. Mohamed Salah, 7. Florian Wirtz (19. Harvey Elliott), 18. Cody Gakpo — 22. Hugo Ekitike (10. Alexis Mac Allister)

Hugo Ekitike, a £79 million arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt, started at centre-forward amid ongoing links between the Premier League champions and Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. He pulled off a wonderful finish inside four minutes.

The France Under-21 international collected a pass from British record buy Florian Wirtz, turned smartly and arrowed a strike across Henderson into the bottom-right corner.

Sarr was brought down by Virgil van Dijk after Alisson denied Mateta in a one-on-one. It was not the last time Liverpool would look defensively ragged, and Palace’s centre-forward made no mistake from the spot.

The Reds swiftly went back in front when Frimpong’s right-wing cross looped in. Ekitike missed a couple of very presentable chances early in the second half but increasingly, midfield duo Adam Wharton and Wil Hughes turned the contest in Palace’s favour.

Both men were involved in the equaliser 13 minutes from time, as Hughes muscled Cody Gakpo out of possession and Wharton threaded a pass through a gap in the Liverpool backline for Sarr to finish via the post. Sarr then made no mistake at the other end before Henderson and Devenny wrote another memorable moment in Crystal Palace history.

6th penalty: Sarr, witht he most nonchelant run-up we’ve seen so far, with a touch of Fred Flintstone. Creams it into the corner. LIVERPOOL 1-2 PALACE

5th penalty: Gakpo… lashes into the corner. Liverpool on the board. LIVERPOOL 1-1 PALACE

4th penalty: Eze, stuttering run-up, but Alisson isn’t buying it and tips onto the post! Oh, but will there be a retake for encroachment? No! LIVERPOOL 0-1 PALACE

3rd penalty: Mac Allister for Liverpool. Takes his time, but Henderson is down magnificently to his left to save! LIVERPOOL 0-1 PALACE

1st penalty: Salah to get us underway in front of the Liverpool fans, where the goalkeepers will have to deal with the glare of the sun. Oh, Salah clatters it way over the bar. Shocker. LIVERPOOL 0-0 PALACE

Fulltime

Twice Liverpool led, twice Palace pegged them back and we go to penalties.

90+6 mins: Oh my, Guehi’s replacement Devenny clips a shot just past the far post. What a story that would have been.

90+5 mins: Robertson whips a teasing ball into the Palace box towards Salah and Henderson is out smartly to claim.

90+2 mins: Cleared to the edge of the box where Szoboszlai whips a shot through the crowd. Henderson gets a good look at it though and holds on. Guehi down and his race is run. The armband comes off.

90+1 mins: Into five minutes of stoppage time as Elliott drives a Liverpool counter and Salah wins a corner. It looks like Marc Guehi has injured himself working back there.

90 mins: Sosa in loads of room at the back post but can only pop the ball into Alisson’s gloves.

84 mins: Another smart move from Palace, who are gobbling up Liverpool in transitions and cutting through them. It’s cutback to Mateta who comedically shovels his finish into the fans behind the goal. Elliott replaces Wirtz for Liverpool, who also send on Robertson for Kerkez. Lerma replaces the excellent Wharton in the Palace midfield.

83 mins: Chance for Salah but he drills too close to Henderson. You’d expect the Ballon d’Or nominee to do better there.

81 mins: Mac Allister is cleared, I think he’s quite fortunate there. Van Dijk heads the corner clear, as far as Hughes. Konate makes sure next time.

79 mins: Kerkez flies into a goal-saving challenge on Sarr. The ball is deflected behind for a corner but Palace want a penalty for handball agaisnt Mac Allister when the cross came in…

77 minsGOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Ismaila Sarr!!!!!

Palace level and they’re good value for it. Hughes ransacks Gakpo and Liverpool are vulnerable in transition again before another moment to forget for Van Dirk. Sarr storms into the box and finishes via the post.

72 mins: Szoboszlai instantly enjoys his increased freedom with a speculative drive that Henderson grasps at the second attempt.

71 mins: Ekitike and Jones make way for Liverpool, with Mac Allister and Endo on. That should mean Szoboszlai being pushed further forward alongside Wirtz.

69 mins: Wirtz would love to mark this occasion with a goal and he tends to do much better from the edge of the box than larruping one way over, as he does here.

62 mins: Szoboszlai gives the ball away carelessly near the centre circle and Palace cut through, Wharton finds Eze, who engineers space outside Konate and draws a fine save from Alisson at his near post.

61 mins: Wharton swings a right-wing corner to the back post. Richards gets up and heads into Alisson’s chest. Nevertheless, it will concern Slot how vulnerable his side look aerially. Konate looks like the only Liverpool player capable of hanging with Palace at the moment.

58 mins: Close for Palace! Guehi floats a teasing ball into the area, Mateta flicks it on and Sarr just fails to get the decisive touch. Liverpool creaking at the back a little.

54 mins: Sarr slips a pass through to a scampering Eze, who goes down in a crumpled heap inside the Liverpool box but there’ll be no penalty this time.

52 mins: Another chance for Ekitike to get his second. Wirtz drives a lovely ball low towards the near post and the former Eintract Frankfurt star fires over first-time.

49 mins:: A worry for Palace as Munoz goes down injured after colliding with the referee. He’s back up and limping now. That’d be a farcical way for such a fine performance to end. It looks like he’ll be okay.

46 minsBig chance for Ekitike! A close-range header at the far post for the striker, who really should do better.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

Back underway. No changes at the break for either side. Rememeber, if this is level after 90 minutes we will go straight to penalties.

Halftime

Liverpool lead through one moment of lethal, clinical attacking play from Ekitike and one amusing moment of good fortune for Frimpong. Mateta scored a penalty in between those goals and Palace have posed enough questions to remain right in the hunt, most notably through the irrepressible Munoz down the right flank.

45+2 mins: Munoz in behind Liverpool down the right once again. Sarr gets free of Konate at the back post, flings himself at the ball but can’t make contact.

45 mins: Wirtz now goes into the book for delaying the restart. We’ll have seven minutes of added time.

43 mins: Konate gets the booking that never feels too far away for centre-backs grappling with Mateta. He thinks he got the ball. He didn’t. And we have another twist in that heavyweight contest.

37 mins: Hughes gets on the end of one in the Liverpool box but spanks his shot way over. Mitchell coming in behind him was probably better placed.

35 mins: Kerkez bangs a long throw into the Palace box. Van Dijk wins the flick on, but Mitchell hoofs clear.

29 mins; Palace forced into an early change as Kamada departs. Will Hughes into the action.

25 mins: The players take a drinks break. Well earned, you have to say!

21 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Jeremie Frimpong!!!!!

Good day for debutants. Frimpong gets forward from right-back, as he tends to. He hangs up a chipped cross towards the far post but it loops up over Henderson and in. Did he mean it? Does he care? Negative to both.

20 mins: Munoz raids forward down the right and finds fellow wing-back Mitchell at the back post. Ohhh, he should have done better than steering his volley tamely wide there, you know.

16 minsGOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Jean-Philippe Mateta (pen)!!!!

In contrast to the one-on-one, Mateta strides up and makes no mistake. Alisson went the wrong way but that was belted right into the corner in any case.

Available in the UK

15 minsPENALTY FOR PALACE! Mateta darts through on goal, Alisson makes a fine save but Palace keep the attack alive, Van Dijk lunges in on Sarr and it’s a spot kick. That’s confirmed following checks for offside against Mateta and the challenge itself.

14 minsMagnificent save from Henderson! Liverpool launch a lightning break after an impudent flick from Ekitike. Salah steers to the far post and Gakpo looks sure to finish, only for Henderson to sprawl full-length and keep it out.

Available in the UK

11 mins: Liverpool look to counter from Konate’s clearance but Palace snaffle it and counter the counter. Konate has seen quite enough of his good work being spurned and shoves Eze over. Free-kick to Palace and the centre-back is a little fortunate not to be booked.

10 mins: First bit of threat from Palace as Kamada shuffles nicely into the Liverpool box towards the byline. Frimpong gets back to concede the corner and the towering Konate gets up to clear.

8 mins: Ekitike looking for a little more joy, this time from the right of the box. Sharp start from the centre-forward. Liverpool turning up at Wembley wearing cream is currently going better than when they did in 1996 (Google it, younger readers).

4 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Hugo Ekitike!!!!!

Ekitike off to a flying start in Liverpool colours and it’s a wonderful goal as he turns, cuts inside from the left-hand corner of the box and drills an unerring strike across Henderson.

Kickoff: 1st Half

Off we go. Behind Henderson’s goal, the Palace fans have a pyrotechnic demonstration against UEFA underway. We are so back, ladies and gentlemen.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams and, prior to the tributes to Jota, we’ll have the UK national anthem, which gets its now traditional reception from the Merseyside contingent.

20 mins before kickoff: Diogo Jota’s untimely death has cast a long shadow over Liverpool’s summer and will continue to do so for his friends and former team-mates. There are several banners in the Liverpool end at Wembley today paying tribute to the Portugal international, while Liverpool have “Forever 20” embroidered into their warm-up gear and playing kits. Both teams will wear black armbands and observe a minute’s silence before kickoff.

35 mins before kickoff: Ryan Gravenberch will usually be a lock-in for one of those central midfield spots in this re-tooled Liverpool side but the Dutch international is absent today after his wife gave birth last night. Congratulations to them!

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in. Liverpool’s four big signings (so far) are all present and correct, with Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz and Ekitike all in from the start. Jones partners Szoboszlai in central midfield, an apparent redeployment for the Hungary international to accommodate Wirtz. Alexis Mac Allister is fit enough for a place on the bench.

If Liverpool’s player turnover is uncommonly high for contemporary Premier League champions, Palace are here to provide a sharp contrast. Oliver Glasner has named the exact same XI that beat Manchester City here to lift the FA Cup in May. Will purported Liverpool target Marc Guehi and star attacker Eberechi Eze still be at Selhurst Park at the end of this month?

1 hr 30 mins before kickoff: Liverpool go into this match as heavy favourites, but defeat might be no bad thing. Sides triumphing in this match but then falling in pursuit of their primary goal has led to talk of a Community Shield curse. Manchester City were the last team to win the Community Shield and go on to lift the Premier League in the 2018/19 season. Since then City (2019), Liverpool (2020), Leicester City (2021), Liverpool (2022), Arsenal (2023) and City (2024) have lifted the Community Shield and failed to win the Premier League.

2 hours before kickoff. Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of the FA Community Shield clash between Crystal Palace and Liverpool. Curtain cords at the ready.
