Crucial update on Sidney Crosby’s future with Penguins

The future of Sidney Crosby with the Pittsburgh Penguins has been a story of rampant speculation this summer as he heads into the first year of his current 2 year contract extension that he signed last summer with the club that expires in the 26-27 season. As the Penguins are clearly entering a rebuild, the question remains whether Crosby will be a apart of the team’s future.

Well, at least in the short term, it appears Sidney Crosby will be a Penguin as insider Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts has stated he will likely not be traded this summer. Meaning, he should at least start the 25-26 season within the Penguins organization.

The 37 year old is entering a staggering 21st season with Pittsburgh this upcoming season. It will be interesting to see whether he plays the full year with the team or is potentially traded by the 2026 trade deadline.

Based on the Penguins offseason moves, this is a team that visibly wants to be in the Gavin McKenna running. But if the Penguins could find a way to keep Crosby in the fold, the prospect of him potentially mentoring McKenna as Mario Lemieux did for him would be enticing if the Pens were to get lucky and receive the 1st pick in the draft.

Crosby recorded 33 goals and 58 assists for 91 points in 80 games last season. Over the course of his 1,352 game NHL career all with the Penguins, he has amassed 625 goals and 1,062 assists for 1,687 points in the regular season. In the postseason, he has touted 71 goals and 130 assists for 201 points in 180 games.
