Cowboys vs. Lions result: Detroit keeps playoff hopes alive, while Dallas has less than 10% chance to make postseason

JUMP TO:

There are only five weeks left in the 2025 NFL regular season, making each matchup weigh more and more with playoff implications.

The Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions kicked off Week 14 with an exciting “Thursday Night Football” matchup. The Cowboys entered 6-6-1, while the Lions were 7-5. Neither team was leading their respective division, and were eyeing the playoffs as possibly a Wild Card team.

Dallas’ defense could do little to stop Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs. He ran the ball 12 times for only 43 yards, but scored three touchdowns on the ground. Gibbs added 77 yards on seven receptions. Amon-Ra St. Brown didn’t practice all week due to an injury, but he brought in six of his nine targets for 92 yards.

For the Cowboys, star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb went down with an injury in the third quarter. He suffered a concussion and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. In Lamb’s absence, Ryan Flournoy had a career game with nine receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to pick up the win.

The Lions came away with the impressive 44-30 win. Detroit now sits at 8-5, only one game behind the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North. If both teams lose their Week 14 matchups, Detroit will be back in the divisional picture down the stretch of the season.

Dallas’ loss moves them to 6-6-1. The Cowboys can still catch the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East race, but they need a lot of help. The Amazon Prime Video broadcast said that the loss by Dallas gives them a 9% chance to make the postseason.

The Sporting News tracked updates as the Cowboys take on the Lions for Week 14’s “Thursday Night Football.”

Dallas faced third and three with 3:50 left in the game on the 11-yard line. Ferguson got called for pass interference, but it was declined to bring up fourth down.

With a 10-point deficit, Dallas elects to kick the 29-yard field goal.

TOUCHDOWN — Lions 37, Cowboys 27

11:02 p.m. — Detroit started with back-to-back two-yard runs. Goff then hit Williams for a 29-yard gain, and was hit late with the yardage tacked on after the play. Gibbs picked up three on the next play, and then forced his way into the endzone from 10 yards out for the score.

TOUCHDOWN — Lions 30, Cowboys 27

10:55 p.m. –The Cowboys take over with 11:50 left in the game, trailing by 11. Prescott picks up a first down with a 12-yard run and then Williams had an 11-yard run of his own. Prescott hits Flournoy for five yards, and then 42 yards in busted coverage. Ferguson comes down with the two-point conversion.

FIELD GOALLions 30, Cowboys 19

10:48 p.m. — The Lions started on their own 29-yard line. Detroit went 40 yards over 10 plays in nearly six minutes of game time. As the quarter changed to the fourth, the Lions made it on the edge of the redzone. Bates knocked through a field goal, that didn’t get blocked, from 46 yards out.

FIELD GOAL — Lions 27, Cowboys 19

10:35 p.m. — Prescott found Flournoy for an 18-yard gain. After the drive stalled following a 10-yard pass to Ferguson, Aubrey nailed his third field goal of the night. This one, from 63 yards out.

10:25 p.m. — Goff started carving the Cowboys defense through the air. He had completions to Williams (7 yards), Gibbs (10 yards) and Williams again (16 yards). The Lions made their way down the field, but couldn’t come away with points. Bates attempted a field goal and it was blocked.

TOUCHDOWN — Lions 27, Cowboys 16

10:12 p.m. — Prescott responded with a 32-yard pass to Lamb. After an 11-yard run by Williams, Prescott tried to hit Lamb deep. He went for a highlight reel catch, bobbled it and hit the ground hard. Lamb suffered a concussion and was ruled out for the game.

The Dallas offense worked its way down to the goal line and Williams punched it in from one-yard out.

TOUCHDOWN — Lions 27, Cowboys 9

10:04 p.m. — It took two plays and Goff found Isaac TeSlaa for a 12-yard touchdown.

10:03 p.m. — The second half starts horribly for Dallas. Prescott threw a ball to George Pickens on a quick slant. It hit the receiver in the chest and popped in the air after contact from the defender. The Lions picked it off and took it back to the 14-yard line.

END OF HALF

FIELD GOAL — Lions 20, Cowboys 9

9:47 p.m. — The Lions got the ball with 45 seconds left in the first half. St. Brown had a four-yard gain. Goff threw inside to Gibbs for a gain of 18. St. Brown then had a reception where he ran out of bounds to stop the clock. There are 17 seconds left in the half.

After two incompletions, Dallas got flagged for a defensive pass interference call. Detroit got into field goal range and Jake Bates connected on a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the half.

FIELD GOAL — Lions 17, Cowboys 9

9:39 p.m. — Prescott starts the next drive with a five-yard pass to Williams and a 21-yard pass to Lamb. He aired the ball out to George Pickens at the endzone, but he was interfered with. It looked like it was going to be a huge gain for Dallas, but it ended up being offsetting penalties, so they replayed the down.

On a later third and 15, Prescott found Ferguson for an 11-yard gain. Instead of going for it, Aubrey hit a 55-yard field goal.

TOUCHDOWN — Lions 17, Cowboys 6

9:25 p.m. — Detroit’s drive started with back-to-back penalties between holding and a false start. After an eight-yard gain, Goff threw deep to Williams for a 25-yard gain. Following an incomplete pass, Montgomery ran the ball in for a 35-yard touchdown.

9:20 p.m. — Prescott didn’t go back to a short yardage play and instead hit Lamb for a 37-yard gain to begin the drive. The quarterback then lost 15 yards as he threw a backwards pass, but luckily it was recovered. After a five-yard gain, Prescott checked down to Ferguson, but then the tight end fumbled and Detroit recovered that one.

9:14 p.m. — After an incomplete pass and a penalty, Goff connected with Gibbs on a 13-yard pass. It wasn’t enough for a first down and Goff’s third down pass to Jameson Williams fell incomplete. The Lions decided to punt on fourth and two from their own 37-yard line.

FIELD GOAL — Lions 10, Cowboys 6

9:07 p.m. — Dallas started its drive with two runs and a short pass for the first down. For the last play of the first quarter, Williams ran the ball up the middle for a gain of three.

After the quarter break, Prescott hit CeeDee Lamb on third and six, and it looked like the wideout was going to be short. He broke a tackle and took the ball up the sideline for a gain of 16. Facing another third down, Williams picked up five to move the chains.

Dallas again picks up another third-down conversion as Prescott snuck the ball up the middle for a gain of one to get to the Lions’ 15-yard line. Detroit’s defense held tough when it mattered. The Lions sacked Prescott on third down to set up the short, 42-yard field goal by Aubrey.

TOUCHDOWN — Lions 10, Cowboys 3

8:52 p.m. — St. Brown’s ankle appears fine. After some short gains to begin the drive, Goff found his top wide receiver for a gain of 27.

After the huge gain, Gibbs capped the drive off with a TD.

8:43 p.m. — After two penalties on Dallas on the punt return, the Cowboys started the drive from their own four-yard line. Javonte Williams had a two-yard run and then Prescott threw to Pickens for a gain of three. Detroit pressured Prescott and it looked like it was a safety. After review it was ruled fourth down on the inch-line.

The Cowboys punted, and Lions returned Tom Kennedy brought the good punt back into Dallas territory.

8:37 p.m. — After Gibbs dominated the first Detroit drive, David Montgomery picked up two yards on the first play of the next drive. Goff had back-to-back incompletions to St. Brown, the Lions decided to punt.

FIELD GOAL — Cowboys 3, Lions 3

8:30 p.m. — The Cowboys offense takes the field for the first time in the game. After a four-yard run, Dak Prescott hit George Pickens for an 11-yard gain. Prescott later found Jake Ferguson for a gain of 19. After two incompletions and a stuffed run for no yards, Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey answered Detroit with a field goal of his own. Aubrey connected from 57 yards out to tie the game.

FIELD GOAL — Lions 3, Cowboys 0

8:22 p.m. — Goff wasted little time getting St. Brown involved in the game he was expected to miss. He caught the first pass of the game for a gain of seven. Facing third and three, Jahmyr Gibbs had a rush for 19 yards for the fresh set of downs.

Goff found Gibbs again, this time for a gain of 26. Facing third and eight in the redzone, James Houston sacked Goff to set up a field goal. Even with Dan Campbell being aggressive on fourth down, fourth and 18 was too much and instead, Jake Bates hit through a 38-yard field goal for the early lead.

8:15 p.m. — The Cowboys have won the toss and will defer. The Lions will start with the ball in this high-profile NFC matchup.

Pre-Game

7:52 p.m. — Kickoff is about 20 minutes away. Lions quarterback Jared Goff hypes up his teammates as they take the field for warm-ups.

7:37 p.m. — The “Thursday Night Football” matchup will feature two speedsters. Both Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams and Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin can turn on the jets when they get into space.

7:15 p.m. — The Lions players and coaches are sporting t-shirts during pre-game warm-ups supporting girls flag football.

6:50 p.m. — Inactives are in. Detroit is at least listing St. Brown as active.

Lions

Cowboys

6:46 p.m. — One of the biggest storylines of the game has been whether or not star Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown will be able to suit up. He missed nearly all of Detroit’s Week 13 loss to the Green Bay Packers due to an ankle injury.

While it was assumed that he would need another week, the wide receiver went through workouts and gave ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler a thumbs up running off the field when asked if he was going to play.

6:35 p.m. — The Cowboys will be wearing dark navy jerseys. Dallas will be in white pants and silver helmets.

6:15 p.m. — The Lions will be home at Ford Field for the second Thursday in a row. Detroit will be wearing its white jerseys with white pants. Their helmets will be silver and blue.

5:45 p.m. — The Lions are coming off a loss. While many would worry about how they will respond, Detroit usually likes being able to adjust after a loss. Since 2022, the Lions are 14-0 after a loss.

5:15 p.m. — Kickoff isn’t for about three hours. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott is already walking the field. He isn’t in uniform quite yet, but talked to Jane Slater about the last time the Cowboys were in Detroit. The quarterback said, “we lit them up, lot of passing yards. about to do it again.”
