Cowboys tabbed to pursue Kenneth Walker III if Seahawks make no-extension decision

For a team used to having a superstar in their backfield, the Dallas Cowboys running back room is a who’s who of unproven names and veteran castoffs.

Rather than last year’s starter, Rico Dowdle, at a $2 million price tag, the organization opted to compile bargain bin free agents and late-round draft picks to assemble a lackluster committee.

Former Denver Broncos bruiser Javonte Williams is atop the team’s first unofficial depth chart, followed by 2019 second-rounder Miles Sanders and rookie Jaydon Blue.

Even with premier vertical threats CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens on the outside, it could be hard for Dallas to take the top off opposing defenses with such a subpar ground attack.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox pitched the idea of the Seattle Seahawks shipping away elite rusher Kenneth Walker III, which could fill the Cowboys’ most glaring void.

“While the 24-year-old has been a serviceable starter for Seattle, he missed time with an ankle injury last season and is entering a contract year,” Knox wrote. “The Seahawks may not be overly eager to extend Walker beyond this season and, reportedly, have not even discussed a new deal with his agent. If Seattle is willing to let Walker go next year, it should see what it can get for him now.”

Dallas could ship a fourth-rounder to the Pacific Northwest in exchange for a player oozing with upside joining a superior supporting cast.

A looming extension shouldn’t deter the front office from acquiring another explosive offensive weapon.

If Walker can stay healthy, the Cowboys instantly catapult themselves back into contention in the NFC East.
