Cowboys-Steelers trade proposal sends $5 million promising young tight end to Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers have been connected in a trade involving tight end Darnell Washington.

Washington was drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Steelers and has shown some promise as Pat Freiermuth’s backup.

However, with Pittsburgh acquiring Jonnu Smith from the Miami Dolphins in a recent blockbuster trade, Washington no longer has a long-term future with the franchise.

With Smith and Freiermuth slated to be the Steelers’ top tight ends for the foreseeable future, Last Word on Sports’ Anthony Palacios believes Pittsburgh should trade Washington, and the Dallas Cowboys could be a potential landing spot for the young tight end.

“Washington is still in his rookie contract, and that is something that Dallas is willing to afford, so they may probably get him in the mix between Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker,” Palacios wrote.

The Cowboys could be in the market for a tight end, as Jake Ferguson is coming off a down year, and adding some competition to the position group would be a logical move.

Though Washington may not receive the opportunity to start in Dallas in 2025, the 23-year-old could still find a role in Brian Schottenheimer’s offense and continue his development.

It shouldn’t take much to acquire Washington in a trade, and he’s on a relatively cheap contract, so Dallas should look to trade for the Georgia product. Washington could end up being the Cowboys’ tight end of the future, as Ferguson will hit free agency next offseason.
