The Dallas Cowboys have been busy this offseason. They hired a new head coach and are still trying to work out an extension with Micah Parsons. However, they may not be done adding to their roster.
The Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Jonnu Smith on Monday. Smith was a Pro Bowler last season and figures to join Pat Freiermuth to create a great tight end duo. However, his arrival likely makes Darnell Washington available in trade talks. FanSided’s Jerry Trotta suggested the Cowboys trade for Washington, whom they were fond of when he was coming out of college.
“Washington took a top 30 visit to The Star before the 2023 draft,” wrote Trotta. “The Cowboys have a long history of drafting players they invite for in-house evaluations. However, he wasn’t in consideration when Dallas took Luke Schoonmaker in round two at No. 58 overall because of a medical issue. That is why Washington fell all the way to the third round. He was a projected second round pick going in but dropped to the Steelers at No. 93 overall. It was a foot and knee injury that purportedly tanked Washington’s draft stock, but he has yet to miss a game in his young career.”
Washington had 200 yards last season, playing in the shadow of Freiermuth. He was a great tight end in college and could play a role on the Cowboys. He has primarily been used as a blocker. With Smith under contract through 2026 and Freiermuth established as a key player in the offense, Washington may not be of much use to the Steelers.
“The Cowboys, meanwhile, have starter Jake Ferguson entering the final year of his contract and could very easily move Schoonmaker to a TE-needy team,” wrote Trotta. “Washington could be in line to start as soon as next year if Ferguson leaves as a free agent. At the very least, he’d compete for the starting job with ascending second-year man Brevyn Spann-Ford.”

Washington may be able to find a bigger role as a pass catcher on the Cowboys. He checks in at 6’7″ and 264 pounds. He could be a big target for Dak Prescott next season.
