Cowboys predicted to ‘unlock’ offense with 987-yard, 9-touchdown speedster

It’s NFL Draft week, and the Dallas Cowboys have plenty of work to do.

Coming off a 7-10 season, the Cowboys aren’t starting from square one, but they’ve got more question marks on their roster than in any other recent season. New head coach Brian Schottenheimer has his hands full trying to revamp an offense with only two reliable star players, both of whom are expensive.

As Dallas looks to turn the page, they have to find a way to improve the receiver room around superstar CeeDee Lamb. They own the 12th pick in the first round, but will they use it to pick up that much-needed wideout?

Plus, if they do make that decision, which wideouts will still be on the board by that point on Thursday night?

On Tuesday, Ben Grimaldi of Cowboys Wire predicted that Dallas would draft Texas star Matthew Golden, the fastest receiver at the NFL Combine with a 4.29-second 40-yard dash, with the 12th overall pick.

“The first-round selection for the Cowboys has wide receiver written all over it and unless something crazy happens where a top 5 player falls into their lap, Golden might be their pick,” Grimaldi wrote.

“With his quick feet and savvy route running ability, Golden creates easy separation, especially in the intermediate part of the field. The Cowboys need to unlock the speed element to their offense and Golden will help.”

Golden, 21, put up 987 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 16 games for the Longhorns this season. But those numbers are also somewhat deceptive, because Texas was so successful running the ball that they rarely needed to air it out and allow Golden a shot to stuff the stat sheet.

No prospect is a slam dunk, but Golden at least looks to have the physical tools needed to add a new dimension that the Cowboys offense has been lacking.
