Cowboys predicted draft champion Dak Prescott replacement in first round

The Dallas Cowboys will have a busy offseason as they have many roster needs. However, what if the Cowboys overlooked their needs and made a surprising selection in the first round of the NFL Draft?

Last season Dak Prescott was injured and the Cowboys season was essentially derailed. However, even when Dak was healthy, he had 11 touchdowns to eight interceptions and the Cowboys were 3-5. FanSided’s Maitland Rutledge predicted the Cowboys would overlook bigger needs in the NFL Draft and select University of Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe with the 12th overall pick.

“With Cam Ward and Shedur Sanders projected to come off the board within the first few picks, Milroe would be the best available quarterback for Dallas at number 12,” wrote Rutledge. “The Alabama product might still be a project, but he has the look of a quarterback who could be a franchise player. While the first series of mock drafts have him going in the second round, Jerry could gamble and make sure he gets his insurance signal-caller.”

The Cowboys have bigger needs, so drafting Milroe would be a shock. However, drafting Milroe could light a fire under Prescott and make him play even better. Aaron Rodgers won back-to-back MVP Awards after the Green Bay Packers selected Jordan Love. Perhaps Prescott could do the same.

“The move would make Prescott realize he has to fight for his job and could actually lead to one of his best seasons,” wrote Rutledge. “When Steve Young came in, Joe Montana stepped his game up and won two more Super Bowls. When the Packers drafted Jordan Love, Aaron Rodgers still played at an MVP level. While Prescott does not belong in the same stratosphere as those quarterbacks, something needs to happen to him in order for him to take the next step.”

Milroe won a National Championship at Alabama and could enter the draft as the third-best quarterback.
