Cowboys may part ways with $3.75 million lineman before ever playing

After drafting Tyler Booker with the No. 12 overall pick in the draft, the Dallas Cowboys have a difficult decision ahead of them.

Early in the offseason, Dallas signed former Miami Dolphins starting left guard Robert Jones to a one-year, $3.75 million deal, according to Spotrac. With Zach Martin’s retirement, the Cowboys have a void to fill on their offensive line, and though Jones was thought to be a veteran presence to help fill that hole, he has never played anywhere near Martin’s level.

Cowboys Wire’s K.D. Drummond thinks that Jones is unlikely to start, and could even get cut before ever taking the field for the Cowboys.

“Jones has 30 starts under his belt acros his four NFL seasons, including all 17 from his final year with the Dolphins,” Drummond wrote. “On the outside, it initially appeared Jones would be in competition with ERFA re-signing Brock Hoffman, giving him more money than any other free-agent on offense, $3.75 million, but that was before Dallas spent the No. 12 overall selection on Tyler Booker from Alabama.”

“Now, Jones is in competition to be a game-day active backup, with outside training camp competition from fellow free agent signings Saahdiq Charles and Hakeem Adeniji, neither of whom played in 2024. Jones’ age indicates his best days are ahead of him, as do his small-school background and the general notion that it takes a while for a mid-tier UDFA to acclimate himself to the league before he can reach his full potential.”

Dallas did not spend too much this offseason, with Jones being one of their most expensive additions to the offense. At age 26, Jones still has time to play in the league, but with all of the young talent that the Cowboys have added to their offensive line, there may not be a reason to keep Jones and his contract.
