Following a breakout season in 2024, the Commanders are getting a small makeover.
Washington unveiled new alternate uniforms for the 2025 season on Wednesday, threads that are intended to honor the franchise’s “Super Bowl Era” run in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The new alternates resemble the traditional uniforms that the Commanders’ franchise wore under its previous name, including a white jersey and burgundy pants with gold and white stripes. As Washington brings back some older uniforms, it has some fans questioning whether the team will revert to its old name, as well.

Commanders unveil new alternate uniforms
The Commanders posted to social media on Wednesday to showcase their new “Super Bowl Era” uniforms, emphasizing the way the new threads “weave past and present” for the franchise.
The 2025 alternates include a white jersey, burgundy pants with gold and white stripes down the side, and helmets with a “W” that include two white stripes, a gold stripe, and a gold facemask.
In many ways, the uniforms are a lot like the old ones Washington used to wear, though the helmets are different.

“We are excited to celebrate Washington’s rich history with these iconic, Super Bowl Era uniforms this season,” Commanders president Mark Clouse said in the team’s press release. “Ever since Josh Harris and our ownership group acquired the team back in 2023, they’ve placed great value in finding ways to connect the past and present and pay homage to those that made the Burgundy and Gold what it is today.”Â
The threads were inspired by what Washington’s Super Bowl teams from 1982, 1987, and 1991 wore, but they implemented the new-age logo.
“These uniforms honor the most successful era of our franchise — one that reflects a culture of excellence and encompasses many historical moments and special memories amongst our fanbase,” Clouse said. “We look forward to bringing that nostalgic feeling back to fans, while incorporating a modern feel for our next generation of fans.”
The Commanders also dropped an video to go along with the uniform release, which looks back on the Super Bowl titles.Â

Are the Commanders going back to their old name?
Despite throwing it back with their alternate uniforms in 2025, the Commanders are not going back to their old team name, the Redskins. The “Super Bowl Era” threads are merely an added touch for the franchise in 2025 that will highlight the history of the team.
