This retirement slipped under everyone’s radar.
But five-time Pro Bowl offensive guard Brandon Scherff has apparently retired from the NFL.
Pro Football Talk unearthed Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame induction news, in which it says Scherff “retired from playing this summer.”
Scherff shared more thoughts with the Iowa website.
“It’s been something I could never dream of,” Scherff said. “Sometimes I would tell my wife that she has to pinch me, because I’m playing a kid’s game, and being able to do it as a job is pretty amazing. Now, having kids and being able to see them after games is absolutely wonderful. So I would say it’s a dream come true. And I will be forever grateful to have had that chance.”

Scherff has been a free agent, and even recent articles wondered where he might sign.
Apparently, he won’t be signing anywhere.
The 33-year old was once the No. 5 overall pick by Washington in the 2015 NFL Draft.
He spent seven seasons in the nation’s capital, starting all 89 games he played in, and he made the Pro Bowl five times (2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021).
After that, Scherff went to Jacksonville for three more seasons. With the Jags, he was available for all of the 51 possible games and started every one.

At 6-foot-5, 315 pounds and with a strong pedigree, Scherff surely could’ve kept playing if he wanted to. Every-game starters don’t often step away.
But apparently a decade in the NFL has been enough for Scherff, who also went pretty quietly into the next chapter of his life.
It’s fitting. Offensive linemen are said to be doing the best job when no one is noticing them. Maybe that’s what Scherff was going for here.
